2004 Archives

For you history buffs, we will archive every article penned by the Shark Team in 2004.  As each week is finished, we will move the content to this page so you can reminisce about the good old days ... like week 1.

Because of the huge number of articles, this archive is divided into sections:
Preseason | Weeks 1-4 | Weeks 5-8 | Weeks 9-12 | Weeks 13-17 | Playoffs

Week 13

The Prognosticator - Week 13
Tony Holm, "The Prognosticator"
Dec 3, 2004
I'm going to be nice and give the Browns a couple of TD's just in case someone gets lucky and returns one on special teams or Corey Dillon fumbles on the Patriots 10 yard line.  But come on now people.  The Browns are starting rookie Luke McCown for the first time out of necessity against the overwhelming best defense in the league.  Luke McCown hasn't slept in days.  If he comes out of this game with the majority of his limbs he should count it as a win...

Wow – The last couple weeks since my ‘sabbatical’ has resulted in HUGE profits. Hope you’ve come along for the ride, and invested in Vinnie. We are winning on the point spread, on the money line, upside down, and all-over. The folks at sportbetting.com might be putting out a contract on me.

All of us are heading into dangerous times.  Week 11 was the beginning of the last weeks that several of the A – Number - 1 players will be needed to score big.  So now some winning faux franchises may become also-rans.  Is yours next?

Tank TV - Week 13 Games to Watch
Ben Ice, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Dec 3, 2004

In the AFC, it is feasible that an 11-5 team might not make the playoffs. It is also possible that a team that started the season 1-5, including starting the season with four consecutive losses, could make the playoffs.

Week 13 Sleeper Plays / Statistical Breakdown
Adam Wain, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Dec 3, 2004

Inching closer and closer to the Fantasy Playoffs.  Most playoffs start next week so week 13 either means nothing or everything for those trying to clinch a berth or a bye. Therefore I will name and review as many sleepers I can with confidence and give the top & bottom 5 passing and rushing defenses with notable comments.

Onward we venture into week 13!

Week 13
Ron Anish, Fantasy Football Senior Staff Writer
Dec 1, 2004

Manning to Harrison, Holcomb to Bryant, or Collins to Porter? Having any piece of those duos likely meant a victory for your fantasy squad last week. Don't expect any 96-point games this week as the fantasy numbers as a whole will likely be down, but there's still plenty of gold to be found in them thar hills. Happy hunting!

Week 12
Greg Allen, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Dec 1, 2004
The voting this week was real close as Rudi Johnson narrowly edged out Priest Holmes with 45% of your votes.  Of course Rudi lived up to his part of the deal and had a huge game the week he was eliminated.  This past week he rushed for 202 YDs and 2 TDs and helped the Bengals win a division game over the hapless Browns.

Week 13 Waiver Wire Pickups
Glenn Anderson, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Nov 30, 2004

What a monster offensive Week 12 we had! Cincinnati 58 Cleveland 48? Sounds more like a Cavaliers - Bearcats basketball game than a football game! Wow! Am I the only one that had this one pegged as a boring 10 - 3 affair? Even though your fantasy regular season may be wrapping up as soon as this week, your league may still not have a transaction deadline. And amazingly, even 13 weeks into the season, there's still some talent on the waiver wire! Do you own Emmitt Smith? Jamal Lewis? Priest Holmes? Then step right up...time for our Week 13 Waiver Wire picks!!!

The Icebox - 2004...A Sports Odd-ysey
Ben Ice, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Nov 30, 2004

This is the year of the Roethlisberger effect. Similar to the Marino effect, only without the big stats. Ben Roethlisberger, thought by many to have the highest ceiling of all the young quarterbacks drafted this year, may get the opportunity to do something Marino didn’t...win a Super Bowl.

Thanksgiving brings irritating family members together, strange uncles snoring on the easy chair after too much turkey, and midweek football. I look forward to it every year. Thanks to Peyton Manning and Brett Favre for making this week what football is all about. 6 TD passes and 200 consecutive starts respectively. What else could you want?

Week Twelve in Review
Doug Coutts, Fantasy Football Senior Staff Writer
Nov 29, 2004
My Friends, weather is a factor. It's only November and it is only going to get worse. Torrential rains in New Jersey and New England put offense on hold in those games, while a blizzard in Mile High had the opposite effect. Be prepared, know where your guys are playing and how it will affect them. Oh yea, did I miss the memo letting us know that this week had been dubbed "Wear Your Bad Third or Fourth Alternate Uniform"?  Offenses were in high gear this week, EXTREMELY high gear...

Week 14

The Prognosticator - Week 15
Tony Holm, "The Prognosticator"
Dec 17, 2004
I'm about to type something that everyone can have a fun time disagreeing with.  The Steelers aren't that good.  Yes they are ranked #1 in every poll everywhere and they are a good team, but they aren't that good.  While everyone is calling for Ben Roethlisberger for the Pro Bowl, do not be surprised if Ben hits a wall.  In fact, he already has...

The Prognosticator - Week 14
Tony Holm, "The Prognosticator"

This is going to be a good football game.  There are plenty of higher billed games like the Jets and Steelers but I'm picking this as the game that will keep you on the edge of your seat if you just like to watch football.  In fact, throw out all your fantasy angles and plan on spending some time with this game as a football fan...

Sleepers / Statistical Breakdown - Week 14
Adam Wain, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Dec 10, 2004
Playoffs, Playoffs, Playoffs well at least for most leagues.  This time of year you really want to go with the guys who got you there; however matchups and weather must still be in consideration.  I would never suggest taking chances on a flyer type pick hoping he goes off. Therefore I won’t mention players that haven’t done much and now the matchup is so good they are bound to do something because they probably won’t.  Good players are good for a reason and average or backup players are in that position because they aren’t as talented.  I will review good players that have not been that consistent but their matchup is extremely favorable.

The Seadog Report

Dec 9, 2004

Well, fantasy football playoffs are getting cranked-up, and for those of us with IDPs,  there’s a lot of jockeying going on right now. Whether it’s off of the Waiver Wire or just picking a line-up, the search for the right player to play in each slot is getting a bit intense.

Week 14
Ron Anish, Fantasy Football Senior Staff Writer
Dec 8, 2004

It's week 14 so chances are you're in the playoffs or it's the final week of the regular season. Matchups are key from this point on, so be sure to check your bench players to see if they should start over one of your "regulars". Good luck and make the Sharks proud!

The Last Row
Chris 'Scrooge' Dolfi - Tom 'Also Scrooge' Walls, Fantasy Football Staff Writers
Dec 8, 2004

Section 209 of the Linc, a great place to see another whooping. We like Brett Favre, but we'll take the Eagles perfect record versus Favre in Philly. McNabb, Westbrook and Owens put on an offensive clinic. While the defense shuts down the future Hall of Famer and the Packers running game.

Christmas is right around the corner, and the glow of happiness and good cheer is enveloping the City of Brotherly Love, as expectations of Sugar Plums, iPods and a playoff berth warm the cockles of our hearts. Oh...wait, that's not happiness and good cheer - that's dislike and mistrust of fans of any other teams. Well, same difference.

Waiver Wire Pickups - Playoff Edition
Glenn Anderson, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Dec 6, 2004

How's your team doing? Outhouse or penthouse? It's Week 14, and the first week of the playoffs in many leagues. If you're playoff-bound, you probably have your starting squad pretty firmed up by now. But for those of you in leagues where waiver pickups are still an option, you might still need to use them if you are a Marc Bulger, Ronald Curry, Priest Holmes, or Steve McNair owner. But have no fear...the playoff edition of our waiver wire picks have arrived to help you fill you fantasy flaws!

The AFC has dominated the NFC this year, winning 35 times to only 19 losses in inter-conference matches, and it shows in the playoff picture. The end has arrived and either you are the shark or fish bait.  That is the standard line.  But then there are the teams that did not miserably fail and those that just did not make the league championship tournament.  These would be the not quite bad enough to stink up the joint but not good enough to win the whole shebang teams!

Congratulations.  Chances are if your reading this you are either in the playoffs or have already advanced.  As I always say Fantasy Football is 75% managing/GM work and 25% luck.  This can’t be more true in a single elimination playoff format.  Don’t try and over think but go with your best players.  Matchups are good to follow in two instances.  1. When you are between two equal players or 2. When you have no other choice but to pick a sleeper and cross your fingers.  That is what I can help with so here we go again.

Week 15
Ron Anish, Fantasy Football Senior Staff Writer
Dec 15, 2004

It's playoff time and that means the top three QBs in fantasy points from last week were....any guesses? Culpepper, Manning and McNabb, right? Guess again. Try Volek, Griese, and Boller. That sounds more like an ambulance-chasing law firm than a trifecta of fantasy QB studs. Week 15 should return some of the studs to the top of the points list, but keep a close eye on the matchups. There's a couple Drew Bennett's out there just waiting to help you win the week.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the NFL still has numerous questions to answer before the playoff brackets are set.  In the AFC there is a dogfight amongst four teams for one final wild card spot.  The New York Jets control their destiny, needing only a win to lock in the other wildcard spot.  The Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Colts all need a series of events to occur to slip into the final wildcard spot and a shot at postseason glory.
