Matt Wilson A Quiet Year So Far For Offensive Rookies A Quiet Year So Far For Offensive Rookies
Matt Wilson, Fantasy Football Staff Writer
Nov 21, 2009

The 2008 fantasy football season is remembered for the outstanding fantasy performances of some prominent rookies. However, with more than half the 2009 in the books, the current rookie crop has not enjoyed similar success. In his newest edition of “In The Spotlight,” Matt Wilson gives us a breakdown of the top rookie fantasy players.

Brett Martin Tiering Up – Wide Receivers Tiering Up – Wide Receivers

Sep 10, 2009
The last article in my three part series examines where wide receivers should be drafted. Much like my tomato crop this season, this one took some time to ripen.  What is becoming more important with the popularity of PPR leagues is securing top quality pass receivers. For the purposes of this article, I am assuming a PPR league format.

If there is one thing that I believe every fantasy football player should have, it is a personal vendetta list. The list can be comprised of players that have sunk your fantasy football team in the past, but it can also be full of players that just make you mad. Here are the guys that top my list this year.

Fantasy owners saw first hand last season what happens when rookies get a chance to shine, and although 2008 was supposedly the year of the “rookie running back” I’m thinking why can’t this 2009 class deliver as well.

Sean Brennan Sleepers and Busts - NFC East Sleepers and Busts - NFC East

Many consider the NFC East the toughest division in football. All four starting backs in the division have Top 10 potential. The exiting of Terrell Owens and Plaxico Burress have opened up spots for players to impress. Fantasy success depends on surprise or demise. Lets head east, where we’ll wake up some sleepers and bury some busts.

Maurice Jones-Drew has been praised as one of the top fantasy football backs in 2009 for quite some time. Some people are even taking him with the first overall pick in front of Adrian Peterson. He is an especially popular pick in PPR leagues where owners salivate over the fact that he’s never had less than 40 catches and 400 yards in any single season. As Jones-Drew enters his fourth year his stock is higher than ever, but I’m here to tell you one thing: this is one player you do not want to invest in.

Who do you think is more valuable to their football team, Tom Brady or Wes Welker? What do you think Bill Belichick would say? Ask my co-worker who grew up in China and knows as much about football as Paris Hilton knows about acting, and she too would say Brady as a no brainier. Not so fast, though. In points per reception leagues, I’ve seen Welker drafted two rounds before Brady.

Every year brings a new crop of prospects, and every year it seems a different position is the benefactor of the influx of new talent. The year 2004 was QBs, 2005 was LBs, 2006 was RBs, 2007 was LBs and 2008 was RBs. I think we’re due for another position this season ... and that position is WR.

Greg Dietz Are the Ravens' Defensive Talons Still Sharp? Are the Ravens' Defensive Talons Still Sharp?

Someone recently asked me if Baltimore still had what it took as a defense to be one of those squads to reach for early on in a fantasy draft. The team surely did lose a lot in the offseason, and the Suggs deal has to be a glimmer of hope for Ravens fans, but is it enough to say that the once-vaunted defense is still elite?

Matt Cassel may have blown any expectations out of the water when he stepped in for Tom Brady in 2008, but what he will bring to the table in 2009 should make fantasy owners hesitant to look his way on draft day.

Kevin and Pat Williams have led the Vikings to becoming one of the best defenses in all of football. Minnesota is typically one team defense that owners will make a stretch for, but with the latest development in the defensive tackles' quest to elude a four-game suspension, potential drafters should take warning when looking at the Purple and Gold.

Dwayne Bowe is in line to be a PPR stud this year.  Yes the Chiefs are not very good. And yes, the Chiefs have a brutal schedule to start the season. But three things are going to benefit Bowe: new starting QB Matt Cassel, new pass-happy head coach Todd Haley, and most importantly, fantasy playoff matchups that include Buffalo, Cleveland and Cincinnati during Weeks 14-16.

The old days of winning your league by “outworking” your opponents are few and far between. Not only is your key competition watching multiple games each weekend, but odds are they have subscribed to an online service as well. With the playing field leveled, is there anywhere left for you to find an advantage?

Westbrook’s fantasy owners should not waste any time picking up LeSean McCoy with their last pick, because it is practically guaranteed that his name will be there just before the final bell sounds.

A lot of factors have to go into who one should draft first: Should I go with the player I think is best? Should position be factor – do I go RB or QB first?

Berrian definitely benefits from coaches stacking the box with defenders to help minimize the damage done by Adrian Peterson, but if a certain quarterback takes the reins, fantasy owners should expect big things from the 28-year-old wide receiver.

It has been drilled into fantasy culture: "don't draft rookie receivers!" The virgin seasons of Eddie Royal, DeSean Jackson and even Donnie Avery have us questioning what has been thought to be fantasy law. The so called "three-year learning curve" philosophy has come into question. But buyer beware for there are still the James Hardy's, the Limas Sweed's and the Devin Thomas' of the world.

Out of all the positions on your fantasy roster, wide receiver might be the most challenging to fill with consistently productive players. There are simply not enough marquee pass catchers in the NFL that can deliver the big points on a regular basis.  Here's the riddle:  Can a manager acquire two solid starting receivers without sacrificing talent and depth at other positions?
