Fantasy Football Memorabilia

Fantasy News of the Week - 9/6

Football season has arrived!  I say no more. Let's get to the news.

Is Alexander really retiring?
According to the Associated Press so-called retired running back Shaun Alexander is still receiving calls for work and believes he can still contribute. "Man, I'm healthy and excited to play. And I think this year can be a big year for me if I get the opportunity. I can still play the game. I think I can help a team get to the Super Bowl.” One of teams that has shown interest is the Cincinnati Bengals --- which makes sense considering they just dropped Rudi Johnson. It’s definitely something worth watching.

Rookie Jackson to get his chance in Philly?
No rookie receiver could’ve gotten any luckier than former Cal standout DeSean Jackson. According to Philadelphia Enquirer, with Reggie Brown probably sitting this week against the Rams due to a bad hamstring and Kevin Curtis already out, the Eagles will count on Jackson to start opposite Hank Baskett. "Coming into a starting spot like that, it's very exciting," Jackson said. "I'm juiced; I'm pumped. It's a good opportunity for me to get out there." Fantasy owners are pumped too considering how much he showed in the preseason and the fact the Eagles have only one other playmaker on offense. Jackson has the talent and seems to have developed good chemistry with quarterback Donovan McNabb, but will it pay dividends for fantasy owners?

Williams to start in Miami.
One of the most intriguing stories this fantasy season has to be the unlikely possible return to glory for Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, and according to the Miami Herald, he will start in week one. Williams has been a bright spot of the offense, and it has earned him the starting gig for week one. ''Ricky's really played more out there than Ronnie [Brown], so we'll start the game now with Ricky, but Ronnie will be in the game very soon,'' Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Friday. Fantasy owners should keep in the mind that the Dolphins really don’t have much to offer to defenses besides the running game, so Ronnie Brown should see his fair share of touches in week one as well, if he can stay injury free.

What's in store for the Colts?
While much of the focus of Sunday’s night matchup between the Bears and Colts will be on Colts star quarterback Peyton Manning, according to the Indianapolis Star the Colts want balance in their offensive attack. In other words they don’t want the Bears defense to focus on deflecting their passing barrage. "For us to be at our best, we want to be balanced," Manning said. "We don't want a team to put us in a one-dimensional mode. We want in any down-and-distance to be able to drop back and pass, to run the ball or run play-action and keep a defense on its heels."
Note: Quarterback-center chemistry may be lacking this week as pro bowl center Jeff Saturday will not play, leaving the center duties to rookie Steve Justice. It’s a scary thought considering that Manning hasn’t seen any live action in the preseason and is used to having Saturday hiking him the ball.
