On the Rise, On the Fall - Week 7

| More

Welcome to Week 7 of “On the Rise, On the Fall.” Throughout the season, I will discuss players whose stock is rising and others who are not having the same luck. I will avoid naming the obvious studs – Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, etc – and will keep to players whose performance was not as foreseeable.

On the Rise

Matt Schaub, QB, Houston Texans : Schaub has completed his first of three great matchups, but still has Cincinnati and Minnesota up next. You should continue to expect big things in the next two weeks with the Texan passing game clicking on all cylinders. In his last three games, Matt has averaged about 315 yards per game and has six TD’s in that span. With starting QB injuries’ coming in bunches around the league this year, Schaub should prove to be a good fill-in.

Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions : First of all, temper your expectations since we are talking about a Lion running back. However, this rookie, who looked like he lost the job to Rudi Johnson, has looked the best in the Detroit backfield. He is better in the passing game and has had respectable numbers the past three weeks. For a guy who looked like he could be hitting the waiver wire with another potential bad performance after the bye, he has turned into something somewhat valuable.

Deuce McAllister & Pierre Thomas, RBs, New Orleans Saints : This is pretty obvious with Reggie Bush out for about 3-6 weeks. The Saints have San Diego in London this week and then have a bye. However, in Weeks 10 and 11, they face Atlanta and Kansas City. Even though byes will be coming to an end, they could be good flex or RB2 plays. Check out the distribution this week against the Chargers and that should help you judge who is start-worthy after the bye.

Stud of the Week

LenDale White, RB, Titans : 149 yards and three scores will win you the Stud of the Week award. With his favorable matchup and with bye week issues, there’s a good chance owners had LenDale in their lineups. If you did, you were rewarded big time. White’s day was highlighted by his 80-yard TD scamper, which caught fans by surprise since they are accustomed to his goalline TD runs.

On the Fall

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants : From a fantasy standpoint, Eli is not the guy you want in the second half of the season. He has some tough matchups over the next four weeks especially, with the Steelers, Cowboys, Eagles and Ravens on tap. The Giants also have the three-headed monster in the backfield they like to call Earth, Wind and Fire, so that makes Eli even less attractive. He should be able to manage the game, but don’t expect any big numbers from the younger Manning brother.

Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City Chiefs : If you sold high on LJ after he faced those inferior run defenses, you made a very smart move. The run game when a team faces an early deficit is not good, coupled with a bad offense. Mix in some legal troubles and team suspensions and you have a man on the fall.

Julius Jones, RB, Seattle Seahawks : He was a commodity as Seattle headed to their bye week, but ever since then, Julius has steadily declined. Since Week 5, his carries have decreased, which in turn slimmed his yardage. Maurice Morris is also back in action for Seattle. With Matt Hasselbeck out, this Seahawk offense is something to avoid.

Dud of the Week

Peyton Manning, QB, Colts : I’m giving the award to Peyton this week for his 229 yard, two interception, zero TD performance when we thought the Colts “were back.” Reggie Wayne also was affected by the Colts performance as he had just 24 yards. It was a disappointing day for Manning owners. Let’s see what he can do next Monday night against the undefeated Titans.

One Week Wonder

Mewelde Moore, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers : This obviously depends on the health of Willie Parker, but even if Fast Willie is out next week, Moore won’t find much running room against the Giants. He was sure worth the start on Sunday as he scored three touchdowns and ran for over 100 yards. He could be worth something if Parker’s injury doesn’t go away, though.

That’s all for this week’s edition. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail me at pags2122@yahoo.com. Thanks for all of your e-mails so far!
