Welcome to the final
edition of the Brew Crew Corner for the 2009 football season. The stage is set
for the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts to battle it out for
Super Bowl glory. This is the first time since 1993 that both No. 1 seeds will
meet in the final round. For fans of other NFL teams, there is a consensus
neutral balance of how everyone feels about each team. Most will pick the
favorites to win - the Colts - while others will root for the story book season
of the New Orleans Saints who are seeking their first Super Bowl title.
Saints vs. Colts -
Sunday, 6:25 p.m.
As the media hype builds
around the game, many are putting the game’s outcome on the status of Dwight
Freeney. As good as he is for the Colts defense, this game will be decided on
how many opportunities each quarterback gets. Many would argue, but I believe
the games top two quarterbacks will be playing in this game. It has been a long
time since we’ve seen this type of quarterback battle in the Super Bowl. I would
go as far as saying that this is the best quarterback matchup since Super Bowl
XXXII when John Elway faced Brett Favre. Make no mistake - this will be a very
well-played chess match between the two. I look forward to seeing great throws
and hope that this game comes down to the final seconds.
Prediction:
Colts 24, Saints 23
As soon as your season
ends, one of the first things you start thinking about is “OK, who’s No. 1 next
year?” Adrian Peterson took over the No. 1 draft spot this season and finished second
overall. For next season, there is still a ton of questions for every player, but
I feel good about Chris Johnson moving up to No. 1. The first four players
taken will be running backs and you can take their names, throw them in a hat
and pick one with no regrets. After the first four selections, the rest of the
first round becomes a mystery. Frank Gore and Steven Jackson can be studs but
they can also disappoint. Still they are your next best bets at the position.
Picking a wide receiver or quarterback early has never panned out. I’ve ran the
numbers over the past five seasons and those who selected a wide receiver or quarterback
with their first draft pick have won just 10 percent of the time. So 90 percent
of the time, a running back is a strong enough indicator not to be fancy and
stick to the script.
When setting up your
cheat sheets, use an excel spreadsheet as you will need to move players up and
down according to what happens during the offseason with the draft, trades and
other factors. Your board will change as much as a leader board during a NASCAR
race. Just keep up with the news while you are off the Fantasy Football
clock.
Round 1
1 Chris Johnson, RB,
TEN
There are a few names
that will fall from the Top 3 rounds and others that will move up. These names
are the ones I feel most comfortable starting a team with. There will be owners
that will reach and grab a tight end like Dallas Clark or Vernon Davis as well
as the top defense in the league. For instance, if Nnamdi Asomugha got his wish
and was traded to the Jets, which finished with the top pass defense. There
will be owners looking to cash in and expect an even better season and grab the
defense too early. You just sit tight and follow your draft plan and let those
who are unprepared over spend on players.
Enjoy the Super Bowl
festivities but please be safe. I look forward to the Super Bowl ads. They were
disappointing last year but I think they will be better this weekend.
Cheers!
