With most of the Shark League drafts completed, it’s time to take a hard look at your team and identify the areas you need to address. Don’t think you can just draft a team and then wait for the season to start. There are still a lot of changes that will be made between now and then. Teams will still be shuffling depth charts, adding players, cutting down rosters and dealing with injuries. All these factors can affect the team you drafted. You need to keep up with the news and check the waiver wires for players that went undrafted.
Above all, you must always keep in mind that as good as you think your team is it can always be better. For owners who have keeper leagues, look for players that can add depth to your team. For leagues that allow trades, look at teams who drafted poorly or are short on player depth at key positions. You may be able to snag a better receiver or running back because owner B didn’t pay attention or they had a player suffer an injury since the draft. Sometimes you draft a player that another owner covets and you can sell at a high price. This happens with average fantasy owners who are homers to a specific team.
Let us take a quick look at the 1st two rounds of the Mako Shark Drafts 1-8.
The majority of the 1st round had players drafted where they were expected to go. Peyton Manning jumped up 9 spots and was the biggest riser. Clinton Portis fell 6 spots due to his injury concerns. Surprisingly, Thomas Jones fell 5 spots and the draft took place before his injury.
Looking at some of the other positions that were taken in the drafts, we see the 1st TE went higher. The 2nd TE was drafted at the same spot. The 1st defense was taken a lot sooner than mocks and the 1st K was taken a little sooner.
Although individual drafts vary, some players are taken higher than expected. For example, in one draft Peyton Manning was drafted 4th overall. On the other hand you can find value such as the 2nd TE. Above all, the mock ADP has served as a good indicator of where players will go with a few exceptions on key guys.
Be proactive from now until the start of the season. This is part one of a two part series. The next edition will look at player's values in drafts and the players who were overvalued. |
