Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 6

| More
More articles from Doug Coutts

A little thinner than usual this week on the waiver wire. Nothing stands out as a “hot” selection, so the top section will take a week off, but we still have plenty of other players to consider. We dig deep into the Injured Reserve list to talk about a couple of impact players that will be back in the next couple of weeks. A couple of running backs got hurt, so we look down the depth charts of those teams, and we play “St. Louis Roulette” to figure out where all of Danny Amendola’s action will end up in St. Louis.

Something for everyone this week!

Solid Pickups

WR Vincent Brown , San Diego

The Chargers had very high hopes for Brown this year, hoping that he, Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates would form a strong trilogy to catch passes from Philip Rivers. Brown broke his ankle in the preseason, and though many expected that to cost him the entire season, his recovery from surgery was given an eight week time table. Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal have filled in admirably, but it will be Brown that takes over as the top wideout for the Chargers when he returns. With nothing standing out on this week’s waiver wire, grab Brown before he gets on the practice field and enjoy his production once his recovery is complete.

RB Jahvid Best , Detroit

Though Mikel Leshoure showed some promise in Week 3, the Lions have struggled on the ground, so Best would return and assume a significant role in the offense. He hasn’t taken the concussion tests yet, but reports are that Detroit is hoping that Best will pass and be ready to play for Week 7. Best is a proven fantasy contributor. Grab him early in advance of him suiting up and being on the field, especially since our friends at fleaflicker.com have him as one of the top five overall pickups this week (and top selection at running back).

WR Brandon Gibson , St. Louis

The most obvious choice to pick up Danny Amendola’s stats is Brandon Gibson. There is a reason that he is available on the waiver wire in most leagues, with his stats showing a disappointing 13 catches in five games so far this season. Sam Bradford will have to throw the ball to someone. And with Amendola out of the lineup, expect Gibson’s targets to rise significantly.

RB James Starks , Green Bay

Despite being a healthy scratch for the Packers this week, the injury to Cedric Benson earns Starks a mention in this week’s story. With Benson being out at least eight weeks, we see Starks as being active going forward and sliding in front of Alex Green to assume the role as starter. The Green Bay running game is certainly not something to be excited about getting involved in right now, but once the cold weather becomes a factor, look for the Packers to spend more time on the ground. Many forget that it was Starks that played a key role in the Packers’ Super Bowl run, so he is capable of carrying the load.
