Week 13 in Review

Jets 40 --- Dolphins 13

There should be no question of who is the worst team in the NFL. The Dolphins made the Jets look good on Sunday, allowing 40 points in a home blowout. Miami is now 0-12 and are four losses away from the imperfect season. Kellen Clemens threw for 236 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT in the win while Thomas Jones (24 carries for 75 yards) reached paydirt for the first time all season. However, Leon Washington was the star on the ground with 68 yards and 2 TD’s. Coles was active and caught 5 balls for 59 yards, but Cotchery did not play. The Jets improved to 3-9 and will host the Browns in Week 14.

As for the Dolphins, they’re just a complete mess. John Beck threw for 177 yards and 3 picks. He also lost a pair of fumbles. The ground game was inept also as Jesse Chatman ran for just 26 yards. Miami will travel to Buffalo next week in search of their first win of the year.

Chargers 24 --- Chiefs 10

LaDainian Tomlinson had a big day as the Chargers rolled over the Chiefs in Arrowhead. LDT ran for 177 yards and 2 scores. Philip Rivers threw for 157 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT, but Antonio Gates was held to just 1 catch for -1 yards, though. The Chargers appear to be in control of the AFC West now at 7-5. They’ll face Tennessee in an intriguing game next weekend.

The Chiefs were in a 10-10 game at half, but were shut out in the 2^nd half due to the Charger defense, who recorded 8 sacks on the day. Kolby Smith ran for 83 yards on 21 carries while Tony Gonzalez caught 10 balls for 140 yards. Damon Huard was ineffective and Tyler Thigpen even saw some time at QB for KC. Without Larry Johnson, the Chiefs are a completely different team. They’ll travel to Denver, who is likely finished as well. The Chicago game did them in.

Colts 28 --- Jaguars 25

This one wasn’t as close as the scoreboard showed. The Colts had control of this game from start to finish. Peyton Manning was on his game throwing for 288 yards, 4 TD’s, and 1 INT. Reggie Wayne caught 8 balls for 158 yards and a TD. Dallas Clark caught 2 TD’s along with his 60 yards and Joseph Addai ran for 67 yards. Indy is now 10-2 and have essentially a 3-game lead on the Jaguars in the AFC South. The Colts will be on SNF next weekend in Baltimore.

Fred Taylor ran for over 100 yards and his counterpart, MJD, ran for 52 and a score, but it wasn’t enough. David Garrard tossed for 257 yards, 2 TD’s, and 1 INT. The Jaguars are not known for their explosive offense and they could not keep up with #18 and company. Jacksonville, 8-4, will head home to face Carolina next week.

Panthers 31 --- 49ers 14

A real sleeper in Carolina as the Panthers rolled over the Niners in a matchup of Dilfer vs. Testeverde. Vinny won the battle throwing for 169 yards and pair of TD’s and INT’s. DeAngelo Williams rushed for 82 yards and also had 46 receiving yards. Steve Smith caught 8 balls for 64 yards, but the tight ends were beneficiaries of the touchdowns.

The 49ers reverted back to their old ways losing big to the Panthers on the road. Trent Dilfer threw for 171 yards, 2 TD’s, and 4 INT’s. Frank Gore ran for only 58 yards, but caught 5 balls for 53 yards. Arnaz Battle finished with 51 yards and a score. San Fran, 3-9, will host the red-hot Vikings next weekend.

Bills 17 --- Redskins 16

In a game where football was not the focus, the Skins showed that football was not the focal point on Sunday. They could never put away the Bills in this field-goal-fest. Rian Lindell kicked the game-winning FG with just seconds on the clock to give Buffalo the win. It was only a 36-yard attempt because Washington was penalized 15 yards for attempting to call back-to-back timeouts. A 51-yarder in the rain would have been a much more difficult task. Nevertheless, the Bills are now 6-6 while the Skins are all but done at 5-7 in the NFC. Clinton Portis carried 25 times for just 50 yards and a score. Chris Cooley caught 7 balls for 89 yards in the loss.

As for Buffalo, Trent Edwards threw for 257 yards and made some timely throws in the comeback win. Fred Jackson ran for 82 yards and caught 4 balls for 69 yards in his impressive start. Buffalo will host the 0-12 Dolphins next week. With the Browns still on their schedule, and the 6^th playoff spot still up for grabs, the Bills are not just done yet.

Titans 28 --- Texans 20

The Titans finally got a win and improved to 7-5, which is good for a tie for the last AFC playoff spot. Vince Young led the way with 248 yards, 2 TD’s, and a pick. He also ran for 44 yards. LenDale White ran for 60 yards and a TD before leaving the game early with an injury. Chris Brown took over and ran for 46 yards and a score. Roydell Williams and Justin Gage each had a TD for Tennessee. They’ll host San Diego next week in what should be a good game.

The Texans dropped to 5-7 with the loss, but it also came at the expense of Matt Schaub. Schaub left the game early and is expected to possibly miss some time. Sage Rosenfels came in and threw for 185 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Ron Dayne ran effectively with Haynesworth in and out of the game for the Titans. He rumbled for 86 yards and a score. Meanwhile, Andre Johnson caught 9 balls for 116 yards and a TD. Houston will host Tampa Bay next weekend.

Rams 28 --- Falcons 16

Get on the bus, Gus. Mr. Frerotte threw for 311 yards, 3 TD’s, and 2 INT’s in the Rams win over Atlanta. Steven Jackson returned to his elite form with 96 rushing yards, 71 receiving yards, and a TD. Torry “Big Game” Holt also had a big day with 135 yards and a score. St. Louis got their 3^rd win of the year and will travel to Cincinnati next week in what should be a shootout.

As for the Falcons, they’ve got a few problems. Joey Harrington threw for 184 yards and a pick and was replaced by Chris Redman. Redman did well throwing for 172 yards, 2 TD’s, and 1 INT. Roddy White had a big day for ATL with 146 yards and a TD. On the ground, Jerious Norwood rumbled for 94 yards on only 8 carries. Atlanta will host the Saints on MNF in Week 14.

Seahawks 28 --- Eagles 24

AJ Feeley won’t be praised in Philadelphia this week as he threw for 220 yards, 1 TD, and 4 picks in their costly loss to the Seahawks at home. One of those interceptions came inside the redzone with under a minute remaining. The Eagles dropped to 5-7 and it seems like January football will be unlikely for the Birds. Brian Westbrook totaled 139 yards and had a score in the loss. Kevin Curtis also caught 6 balls for 111 yards and a TD.

As for the now 8-4 Seahawks, they got a big road win on the east coast and held their 2-game lead in the NFC West. Shaun Alexander and Mo Morris each ran for 65 yards and a TD. Burleson and Engram each caught TD’s and had 71 and 60 yards, respectively. Seattle faces Arizona at home next week in a huge NFC West game.

Vikings 42 --- Lions 10

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back! Adrian Peterson came back with a vengeance rushing for 116 yards and 2 TD’s on just 15 carries. Chester Taylor also ran for 70 and a TD against the porous Detroit defense. The Vikings are hot and well, the Lions are not. When Tarvaris Jackson throws for 204 yards and 2 TD’s, you know you’re bad. Detroit has now lost four straight and are working themselves out of the playoff picture in the NFC at 6-6 with a tough road still ahead of them.

Jon Kitna threw for 260 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT in the loss and his 10-win prediction is no longer looking good. Roy Williams left the game early before catching 5 balls for 85 yards. The Lions ran the ball just 6 times with their running backs. Detroit will host the Cowboys next weekend while Minnesota travels to San Fran.

Raiders 34 --- Broncos 20

I’ve said it all week long that the Denver loss in Chicago will be unrecoverable for the Broncos. The Raiders took advantage of that and rolled over Denver at home. Josh McCown threw for 141 yards and 3 TD’s while Justin Fargas continued to have success on the ground with 146 yards and a score. Jerry Porter also caught 5 balls for 49 yards and a TD for Oakland. The Raiders are now 4-8 and will travel to Lambeau next week.

The Broncos dropped to 5-7 with the loss and appear to be out of playoff contention in the AFC. Travis Henry played and ran for 49 yards and 2 scores. Brandon Stokely caught 3 balls for 102 yards. Jay Cutler was rattled all day as he tossed for only 214 yards and 2 picks. Denver will host KC in Week 14.

On to the entertaining late games…

Cardinals 27 --- Browns 21

The Cardinals held on to a narrow win at home to improve to 6-6 on the year. It came down to the final play of the game as Derek Anderson threw a pass with no time remaining from the ARZ 37 to the endzone. Kellen Winslow came down with the ball but was knocked out of bounds and there was no “force-out” ruling. The slow start by Cleveland plagued them in this one, though. Kurt Warner finished with 169 yards, 2 TD’s, and 1 INT, but it was the run game that finally got going as Edge ran for 114 yards on 24 carries.

Derek Anderson threw for 304 yards, 2 TD’s, and 2 INT’s in the loss for the Browns. Braylon Edwards had a big day with 149 yards and a score while Jamal Lewis ran for just 62 yards. Cleveland fell to 7-5 with the loss, but have a meeting with the Jets next week in the Meadowlands.

Giants 21 --- Bears 16

Eli vs. Grossman. Could it be possible that the winner would have MORE turnovers and the loser had NONE? That would only be fitting. Eli Manning had 3 turnovers and threw for 195 yards and 1 TD in the Giants comeback win in Chicago. Despite a terrible three quarters of play, Eli led the Giants on the game-winning drive in the 4^th quarter, which was capped with a Reuben Droughns 2-yard TD run with over a minute remaining. Derrick Ward ran extremely well with 154 yards on 24 carries with a TD, but was injured late and could be done for the year. Amani Toomer caught 6 balls for 69 yards, including a big TD on 3^rd and goal, which was originally called incomplete, but later reviewed and overturned. The Giants improved to 8-4 and have a comfortable lead, for now, on the 1^st wildcard spot.

Rex Grossman threw foe 296 yards and a TD for the Bears in their loss. Chicago dropped to 5-7, but that wasn’t the only thing dropping in the windy city. Devin Hester dropped an early 81-yard bomb that would have opened up a 14-0 lead for the Bears. Adrian Peterson ran for 67 yards and caught 7 balls for 82 yards, leading all Bear receivers. Desmond Clark (5-76) caught the only TD for the Bears.

Bucs 27 --- Saints 23

The Bucs stole one from the Saints because Nawlins’ tried to be too tricky. With less than 4 minutes to go, the Saints tried a double reverse when Reggie Bush fumbled and the Bucs took over. Tampa scored the game winning TD with just 14 seconds remaining. Luke McCown played great for the Bucs throwing for 313 yards, 2 TD’s, and 1 INT on the road. Earnest Graham continued to have success running for 106 yards and a TD. Joey Galloway also continued his fortunes against the Saints burning them for 159 yards. Tampa improved to 8-4 and their win coupled with the Saints loss, they now have a chokehold on the NFC South.

The Saints dropped to 5-7 and they’ll have to nearly run the table to have a chance to make the postseason after Sunday’s heartbreaking loss. Drew Brees threw for 179 yards and 2 TD’s while Reggie Bush ran for only 64 yards. The Saints will travel to Atlanta on Monday night football in Week 14.
