Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickups

| More

Another interesting week in the NFL...Alexander, Simms and Vernon "Don't call me VD" Davis go down, Warner's fumblitis returns, and the Texans backfield fails to impress in yet another sad new way. See how you should react to all of these situations in this weeks Waiver Wire column! And special guest stars...two guys named Maurice! Don't miss it!!

Smokin' Hot!!!

Maurice Morris RB Seattle Seahawks

Out goes Sir Alexander, in comes Tickle-Me MoMo!! With the announcement that Shaun Alexander looks to be shelved for the next several weeks with a broken foot, Morris vaults to the top of the waiver wire chart this week. MM has been a solid producer for the Seahawks in the past and knows the offense well. The Bears this week are a tough matchup, and the Hawks have a bye in week 5, but should Alexander miss more time than that, MM is a rock-solid #2 RB in any sized league. And if you think he's the only guy named Maurice you'll read about in this column..think again!

Matt Leinart QB Arizona Cardinals

Kurt Warner has digressed from a two-time NFL MVP, to a short-term fill-in for aspiring young Pro-Bowlers. Just as he did for Marc Bulger in St Louis and Eli Manning in New York, it's been a pretty well-known fact that Matt Leinart is the future in Zona. Well, after Warner's series of red-zone fumbles and interceptions this past week, it would appear that the future may be coming sooner rather than later. Leinart is a rookie and will undoubtedly have some rough patches when he does play, but also comes into the league as one of the most polished passers in recent memory. Add a lethal offensive cast to the mix and Leinart looks to be a pretty good #2 QB and a nice bye-week fill in. If you wait for Denny Green to announce a starter, you'll have waited too long. If he's still around in your league, grab Leinart now!

Solid Pickups

Chris Henry WR Cincinnati Bengals

There are many pretenders, but only one Bengal can be the team arrests leader. And Henry is the man! The day may come when he trades in his Bengal stripes for Sing-Sing pinstripes, but the man can catch a ball, I'll tell you that! With Chad Johnson and TJ Whocanspellit ailing of late with nagging injuries, Henry looks to be a strong short-term play. He torched the Steelers this weekend on the road with a 5 catch 69 yard and 2 TD day. He'll be a boom-or-bust player but don't be afraid to plug him as your #3 WR or as a bye-week fill-in against a suspect Patriot secondary this weekend.

Maurice Jones-Drew RB Jacksonville Jaguars

It's Maurice Day here at the waiver wire report! Rocket Richard wasn't available for this event, nor was Mo Cheeks or that dude from Earth, Wind, and Fire...but a young bowling-ball named Jones-Drew is here to take the torch! JD had a breakout day against a soft Colts run defense, racking up 103 yards on the ground on just 13 carries, as well as 4 catches for 32 yards and a TD...a solid fantasy day indeed! Fred Taylor is healthy and still the main guy, but JD has proven that he's a capable fill-in. I'm rather pessimistic that a dude who's 5' 7" can take the pounding of a full Running Back workload in today's NFL, but maybe he'll prove me wrong. And hey, until Maurice Hicks picks up his game, Jones-Drew is the Mo to know!

Eric Johnson TE San Francisco 49ers

With uber-prospect Tight End Vernon Davis taking the saying "Break a Leg" literally this past weekend, veteran Eric Johnson stepped in and posted a very nice 7 catch 89 yard day with a TD to boot. Davis looks to be out for a month or so, and Johnson looks to be a pretty productive player in his absence. He's put up nice fantasy numbers in the past. Unfortunately, he's been about as durable as an '85 Yugo, but as a short-term play at a weak position, he's a good guy to have on your squad.

Ron Dayne RB Houston Texans

"Fat Dayne" looks to be the man in the Texans running game right now. Which is not unlike being Paris Hilton's favorite pair of underwear...rarely seen and not often missed. But hey, fantasy football is rough and any back getting 15 carries a game has some marginal worth. Dayne isn't really a starting NFL back, but neither are Wali Lundy and Samkon Gado, so who knows what might happen? If you're decimated by injury or just want to make your friends laugh, why not put poor Ron in your staring lineup this weekend?

On the Radar

Bruce Gradkowski QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With little Simms getting his insides scrambled and looking to miss a big chunk of the season, rook Gradkowski looks to be the starter for a while. Gruden typically runs a QB-friendly offense and the Bucs aren't as bad as they've been playing of late. Bruce is mobile and could suprise. Keep in mind that the Bucs have a bye next week...probably a good thing for the rookie.
