Week 5 in Review

Panthers 13 --- Saints 6
Of course I didn’t draft Drew Brees, what am I an idiot? Brees threw for 252 yards with no TD’s and 2 picks. Is his time up? The Saints have some favorable matchups down the road, but a win for the Saints really could have changed things. They are now in an 0-4 hole thanks to a John Kasay 52-yard game-winning FG in the Superdome as time expired. Reggie ran for 67 yards on 21 carries, but caught 9 balls for 52 yards. Henderson reached the 100 yard receiving plateau.

As for the Panthers, they got a big road win to improve to 3-2 thanks to a late comeback led by David Carr. Carr hit Steve Smith for a 17-yard TD with just under four minutes to go to tie it up. Smith finished the day with 47 yards and that TD. Foster ran for 59 yards on 19 carries in the game.

Patriots 34 --- Browns 17
Tom Brady once again led the Pats to a victory as he threw for 265 yards and 3 TDs. Brady has thrown at least 3 TD’s in every game so far this season. Sammy Morris just eclipsed the 100-yard mark on 21 carries. The Pats TE Watson stole the show with 6 catches for 107 yards and 2 TDs. Stallworth finally got into the action catching a TD pass along with his 65 yards receiving. Here’s the big news: Randy Moss did not catch a TD pass! Moss was held in check for just 46 yards, but his distraction enabled the other Pats receivers to get into the endzone. Laurence “I’m a bunch of bologna” Maroney was inactive for the second straight week.

Derek Anderson continues to rack up the yards as he tossed for 287 yards, 2 TDs, and 3 INT’s. He connected with Tim Carter and Winslow for his TD’s. Jamal Lewis left this game early and will undergo an MRI Monday on his foot. Braylon Edwards continued his hot streak catching 6 balls for 110 yards.

Jaguars 17 --- Chiefs 7
The Jags got a key win on the road in Arrowhead Sunday, nearly shutting out the Chiefs. KC scored a late, meaningless TD to avoid the shutout with no time left. Damon Huard left this game and will not start next week. Croyle replaced him and will get the nod next week. Larry Johnson ran the ball 9 times for 12 yards. Tony Gonzalez had 100 yards of receiving while rookie D-Bowe had 70 yards.

As for the winners, Maurice Jones-Drew had a 52 yard TD run while David Garrard managed the game well throwing for 218 yards and a TD to Dennis Northcutt. The Jaguars defense dominated this game from start to finish.

Texans 22 --- Dolphins 19
The kicker gets some love! Kris Brown went 5 for 5 in FG attempts including a game-winning 57-yard FG in front of the home crowd for the Texans third win of the year. After the Texans first drive of the game, they could not get into the endzone again. On that first drive, it took Ron Dayne four tries to reach paydirt. He finished with 16 carries for 40 yards and that lone TD. Owen Daniels caught 6 balls for 96 yards in the win.

As for the Dolphins, Trent Green has no luck. He suffered a head injury early in the game and did not return. Lemon came in for the injured Green, who is expected to miss some time, and threw for 151 yards and an INT. Ronnie Brown continued his success rushing for 114 yards and a TD. He also caught 5 passes for 39 yards.

Cardinals 34 --- Rams 31
The Rams were denied a win for a 5^th straight week. Gus Frerotte threw for 3 TDs, 3 INTs, and 262 yards in the loss. Holt, McMichael, and Bennett were each beneficiaries of the TD’s. Rookie Brian Leonard from Rutgers rushed for 102 yards and had 33 yards receiving.

The Cardinals, who are now 3-2, have no more QBBC. Matt Leinart left the game with an injury and Kurt Warner will be taking over for some time. Warner threw for 190 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. His touchdown pass went to Larry Fitzgerald, who continues to flourish with Boldin out of the lineup. He had 9 catches for 136 yards. The Edge ran for 88 yards on 26 carries.

Redskins 34 --- Lions 3
Close your eyes Kitna owners. Close your eyes. Jon threw for 106 yards and 2 INT’s in a dismal loss to the Redskins in Washington. The Lions have not won on the road against the Redskins in forever. Seriously, they are now 0-21 against the Redskins on the road in their last 21 games. There are some things that are just meant to be and this is one of them. Kevin Jones rushed 11 times for 48 yards, but that was all for the Lions offense.

The Redskins improved to 3-1 as Jason Campbell had a field day throwing for 248 yards and 2 scores. Randel El finished with 100 yards, but also left the game with an injury. The Skins were already without Santana Moss. Clinton Portis rushed for 72 yards, but Mike Sellers took away a goal-line TD.

Titans 20 --- Falcons 13
An ugly game in Tennessee ended up pretty for the Titans thanks to Vincent Fuller’s 76-yard pick six. Vince Young threw 3 INT’s and had just an awful fantasy day. Chris Brown ran for 27 yards and a score while LenDale White rushed for just 32 yards.

Joey Harrington threw for 87 yards and an INT and Byron Leftwich saw some action, but went 2 for 8 with an INT as well. The run game was non-existent for the Falcons as they dropped to 1-4 on the year. The Falcons TD came on a DeAngelo Hall fumble return.

Steelers 21 --- Seahawks 0
No Polamalu. No McFadden. No Hampton. No problem for the defense as they shut down and shut out the Seattle Seahawks.
No Ward. No Holmes. No problem for Big Ben’s offense as Fast Willie Parker did the dirty work and Najeh Davenport hit paydirt twice. Parker rushed for 102 yards on 28 carries, but Davenport got his goal line TD’s. Big Ben had a TD pass to Heath Miller. Santonio Holmes was a late scratch in this game due to a pregame hamstring injury, but it was too late for fantasy owners to pull him out of their lineups. The Seahawks had absolutely no offense whatsoever as they had just 144 total net yards on offense.

Giants 35 --- Jets 24
In the battle of New York, the Giants pounded the Jets early and often. Brandon Jacobs rushed for 100 yards and a TD in his return, along with a fumble early that the Jets picked up for a TD. Derrick Ward also reached the endzone as he rushed for 56 yards. Plaxico Burress absolutely destroyed Andre Dyson down the left sideline for a 53-yard catch and run TD. Shockey had 33 receiving yards and a TD.

The Jets led at halftime by 10, but they really didn’t do much on offense. They scored one offensive TD, a pass from Pennington to Brad Smith. Thomas Jones ran for only 36 yards and Pennington threw 3 costly INT’s. The rookie from Texas, Ross had two of those big picks. One was thrown into the endzone as the Jets were driving and up by 3 points. The other was a pick six to officially end the game when the Jets were looking for a late comeback down by four. Coles led the Jets with 8 catches for 89 yards.

Colts 33 --- Bucs 14
With Marvin, Addai, & Bob Sanders out, the Bucs thought they had a shot. What were they thinking? As long as Peyton Manning is on the field, the Colts are a still a force. Manning threw for 253 yards and 2 TDs- one to Clark and one to Wayne. Kenton Keith, who played for the banged up Addai, rushed for 121 yards and 2 TDs. The Colts will have a bye next week to give their injured players additional time to heal up.

Jeff Garcia threw 2 TD’s in only 143 yards. The Bucs RB’s are taking some hits this year as Pittman is appeared to be lost for at least a month. Joey Galloway had 4 catches for 50 yards in the loss.

Ravens 9 --- 49ers 7
The Niners were 2-0 and now the sky is falling down as everything is going wrong. They have now dropped 3 straight games and Trent Dilfer looks like he will make one of two more starts. Frank Gore rushed for only 52 yards against the stingy Ravens D. A very conservative and defensive game resulted in only one TD from Dilfer to Battle. Willis McGahee rushed for 88 yards and had 48 receiving yards. Derrick Mason caught a game-high 11 balls for 75 yards. However, Matt Stover did all the scoring for Baltimore.

Chargers 41 --- Broncos 3
Did someone wake up the Chargers? Was that the same team we saw for three weeks? Something happened, but San Diego needed it. Rivers threw for 270 yards and 2 TD’s and had a rushing TD as well. He only threw to 3 different receivers- Gates, Jackson, and LDT. Tomlinson ran for 67 yards and had 73 receiving yards, but Michael Turner was the story on the ground. He ran for 147 yards and a TD on just 10 carries. The two TD recipients stat lines were as follows: Vincent Jackson had 84 yards receiving while Gates had 113.

The Broncos fell to 2-3 and the Raiders now sit atop the AFC West at 2-2. Javon Walker missed his 2^nd straight game and hopes to return after the Denver bye. Jay Cutler is definitely missing his top target as he threw for only 232 yards with an INT. Henry played despite the injury and the off-the-field issues and rushed for 65 yards. Brandon Marshall led all Broncos WR’s with 72 yards.

Bears 27 --- Packers 20
If the Packers are battling for the NFC North in December, they’ll know what game to look back on. The Green Bay Packers had their chance to put away the Chicago Bears and improve to 5-0 on the year. The Bears were facing a 1-4 hole and were down 10 points entering the 2^nd half when they probably should have been down more thanks to two James Jones fumbles.  However, they made a great comeback as a late Brett Favre INT gave them life. The Bears scored a TD on the very next play and the Packers played too conservative down the stretch. After a Robbie Gould FG to tie it, Desmond Clark caught a Griese TD from 34-yards out. The Bears scored the last 17 points in this game. Cedric Benson ran for 64 yards and a TD.

The Packers found a running game, but may have stuck with it too long late in this game. Wynn rushed for 78 yards and a score while Morency had 43 rushing yards. Favre was 29/40 with 322 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INT’s. Greg Jennings had 83 yards and a TD while Donald Driver had 51 yards.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
Cowboys travel to Buffalo.

Something about Monday Night home games. Buffalo has not had one in a while. The Cowboys should win, but don’t be shocked if Buffalo pulls this one out as the Cowboys look ahead to their matchup with the Pats next weekend.
