Repeat after me, the Waiver Wire can by my friend, the Waiver Wire can be my friend. Yes, that's right. No matter where you are in the standings, you should be able to find something on your league's waiver wire. Even if your team is chugging along, destroying all in your path, you must have room on your roster to claim a player or two, if for nothing else to keep your competition from getting them (and potentially playing them against you). Be vigilant and be active, words to live by.
This week's list has plenty of choose from...
Smokin' Hot
RB Garrett Wolfe, Chicago
I'm going out on a limb here, but I feel that Wolfe needs to be listed at the top of today's article so that you understand how serious I am about you picking this guy up. I'm not necessarily saying that he's the #1 guy to be picked up this week, but I am saying that should you get shut out of this week's "glamour list" in free agency, there are alternatives.
The Bears are clearly not happy with the production out of Cedric Benson. The numbers are not near what they expected when they traded away Thomas Jones, and Benson continues to have problems holding onto the football. Chicago even took the drastic step of keeping Benson on the sideline for almost the entire fourth quarter last week. This is not a news flash, the Bears need to be a running team to win, and right now, since they are unable to run the ball, they have been unable to win. Not winning is not an option.
Chicago may have an alternative to Benson, and that is Garrett Wolfe. Ok, yes, I know, Adrian Peterson. Sometimes drastic times call for drastic measures, and I wouldn't put it past Chicago to give Wolfe a shot, especially with Peterson nursing this and that injury. Your fantasy team chugging along and you aren't at the top of this week's waivers? No worries, grab Wolfe and see what happens. Yes, I am crazy, but Wolfe really has the potential to grab the starting job and run with it for the Bears.
RB Earnest Graham/Michael Pittman, Tampa Bay
Now onto a couple of the "glamour guys". I'm not breaking news here telling you that Cadillac Williams is done for the season. Probably not breaking news that these are the guys are replacing him, but a guy has to do what a guy has to do. I see Graham as getting the bulk of the work, first and second downs as well as the goal line. Pittman will probably be the "change of pace" and third down guy. Both should be owned in all leagues as these two should be the top waiver pickups this week.
RB Dominic Rhodes, Oakland
I'm being forced to mention Rhodes here this week. Honestly, he's a guy that should have been selected on draft day and kept on someone's roster, but my editor is forcing my hand here. LaMont Jordan's injured back is very much a concern, and now that the suspension is over, Rhodes could step right into the starter's role in week six. Make sure that he's not sitting on the waiver wire.
WR Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City
Bowe makes the move from the "On the Radar" list, to the "Hot" list. Hopefully you acted last week, but if by some chance he is still available, get him. I would consider Bowe as a solid WR2 fantasy starter right now...
Solid Pickups (aka. QBs that will be playing)
QB Kurt Warner, Arizona
I came close to putting Warner on the "hot" list, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Warner is definitely the better option for the Cardinals, and represents a clear ability for the team to win games right now. He's been coming off the bench to run the two minute offense, and last week he got a little more time than that, entering the game in the second quarter. He's not a guy that you can count on right now, but if you are hard up at the position, grab Warner and hold onto him.
QB Damon Huard, Kansas City
With a second straight solid week, we can now recommend that Huard be picked up. The emergence of Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs offense actually moving the ball makes Huard a decent bye week fill in.
QB Trent Dilfer, San Francisco
Notice that I changed the title of this category, Dilfer is the reason for that. I have a very hard time recommending Dilfer, he looked horrible last week. But, it looks like he'll be playing this upcoming week, and possibly beyond that. The 49ers are up against Baltimore this week, so only if Dilfer is the last possible QB playing this week should you be starting him. Beyond week five, he could settle down if he is going to be the long term solution for San Francisco with Smith out. Again, in this case I'm merely pointing out a guy that will be starting in case you are out of options.
On the Radar
WR Michael Jenkins, Atlanta
Speaking of offenses showing signs of like, hello, Atlanta! Though Jenkins hasn't cracked the starting lineup, he is becoming a go to guy for the Falcons. Six catches and sixty plus yards this week, but more importantly, two scores. If nothing else, he should continue to be a target in the red zone.
WR Keenan McCardell, Washington
With Santana Moss expected to miss several weeks, the Redskins have signed McCardell. Looking over the other options at WR for Washington and you can see why. McCardell is a veteran that would be able to step in and perform so keep an eye on his playing time potential.
TE Quinn Sypniewski, Baltimore
Who? Yup, these are the guys you are going to read about here on a weekly basis. Your starting TE on a bye this upcoming week? Grab Mr.S and start him. Both Todd Heap and Daniel Wilcox missed time with injury last week, no problem, the Ravens plugged in Mr.S and all he did was catch six passes for thirty plus yards and a touchdown. If Heap is going to be out an extended period of time, Mr. S will continue to fill in as the Ravens offense will use the TE no matter who it is.
Dynasty Only
RB Leonard Weaver, Seattle
Last week we highlighted Alvin Pearman in this space, since we're not entirely confident in Shaun Alexander making it thru the entire season. Well, the injury bug bit the Seahawks running core last week, but it wasn't Alexander. Pearman was hurt and will miss the rest of the season, that bumps Weaver up the depth chart a notch.
RB Kenneth Darby, Tampa Bay
While Graham and Pittman will be the glamour guys from Tampa Bay on the waiver wire this week, the shuffling of the depth chart moves Darby into the third position.
RB Justin Fargas, Oakland
We've discussed the Raiders/Jordan/Rhodes already here so I won't rehash. With Jordan hurting, it wouldn't be a bad idea to add Fargas to those of you with deep rosters. I've always considered him to be a guy that can handle the load, just that he hasn't been given the opportunity. Jordan's absence would bump Fargas up a notch closer to being the starter or at least a RBBC member.
