Week Four Waiver Wire Pickups

| More

Injuries continue to mount around the NFL, and this is about the time that teams start to make changes based on poor performance.  Quite a few teams are looking to make a move at the quarterback position, be vigilant and make sure you are covered, especially with the bye weeks now in full swing.

A bit of a thinner slate than usual, which means that you have to really consider diggnig deep for that last spot on your roster.  If possible, you always want to have at least two, preferrably three starting NFL quarterbacks.  A wise fantasy owner always has a couple backup RBs and even backup to the backup RBs on their roster, depending on the situation.  Of course, we'd all like to own some beach front property too...hopefully this week's waiver wire can help you find some warm sand on a cool autumn day.

Smokin' Hot
QB Trent Green, St.Louis
The Rams offense needs a spark and the word out of St.Louis is that the Rams are making a move at the quarterback position.  I don't know if Marc Bulger is hurt or hurting, but what I do know, he is hurting the offensive production.  St. Louis has plenty of weapons and Green has done the job in the past, look for 250 or so yards per week and a couple of TDs, especially if the Rams continue to play catchup in games.

RB Correll Buckhalter, Philadelphia
With Westbrook missing time last week, the Eagles turned to Buckhalter for the bulk of the touches.  He responded with just under 90 yards of total offense and a touchdown.  Certainly we're not suggesting that Buckhalter would carry Westbrook's numbers, but it appears that he will be the guy to get the majority of the action if Westbrook should continue to miss more time.

RB Steve Slaton, Houston
Slaton is available in some leagues, grab him.  Historically, the starting runningback for Houston hasn't put up high numbers, but he'd be a starting runningback, that should be enough to get him on someone's fantasy roster.  The planned RBBC with Chris Taylor is long gone, Slaton will be the starter from this point forward.

Solid Pickups
QB Brady Quinn, Cleveland
The Browns offense is struggling mightily, and with the artificially high expectations this year based on last year's record, change is in the air.  Derek Anderson has done poorly (to say the least), and already the coach is talking about getting the "other guy" some reps in practice.  Anderson has two strikes against him, if Cleveland continues to lose, the future of the franchise will need to get his feet wet.  At the same time, if they continue to lose and struggle, they'll need a spark to turn things around before the season is lost.  Quinn is likely to see the field within a couple of weeks, plan accordingly.

PK John Carney, New York Giants
Yes, I'm actually making it a point to try and talk about at least one kicker per week that might be available.  Carney is averaging three successful field goals per week in three weeks, don't hesitate to make a move if the guy you currently have is struggling.  The Giants offense has done well to get into field goal range, but has often stalled, a perfect recipe for a fantasy kicker.

On The Radar

QB Kyle Orton, Chicago
The Bears passing game is showing faint signs of life, very faint.  At this point in the season, given all that has already gone on at the position, you may be struggling to simply find a quarterback that will be playing as your backup.  Orton may not be a bad consideration if you've lost your other options at QB.

WR Brandon Lloyd, Chicago
It's almost a requirement that this column talk about a guy that explodes for over 100 yards and a TD, even if it is out of the blue.  I'm certainly not recommending the Bears passing game at this point in time, but worth keeping an eye on.

TE Donald Lee, Green Bay
I see Lee available in many leagues.  A disappointment so far this season, he's been called upon to block more than usual, which directly affects his numbers.  A slight uptick in week three could be a sign that the Packers are going to let him loose a little more, good backup TE with the potential for more here.

QB Drew Stanton, Detroit
The Lions are another team like the Rams, plenty of offensive weapons, difficulty at the quarterback position.  Jon Kitna was dinged up last week, this could be the excuse that the Lions need to plug in the youngster and let him loose.

WR Lance Moore, New Orleans
The Saints youngster looked very good this past week, 7 catches for 78 yards.  Nothing to get too excited about, but could be a sign of things to come?  New Orleans passes the ball...a lot, not a bad thing if you can get involved with that offensive unit.

Deep and/or Dynasty Only
RB Kenny Watson, Cincinnati
The Bengals backup to Chris Perry continues to wait, personally I think it's only a matter of time before Watson gets on the field and runs away with the starting job.  I just can't see Perry staying healthy.  The starting runningback for the Bengals will put up decent fantasy numbers, make some room at the end of your bench for this eventual starter.

RB Lorenzo Booker, Philadelphia
Despite outperforming Buckhalter in the preseason, it is clear that based on last week, Booker is RB3 on the Eagles.  I see Booker getting some time, but Buckhalter will get the majority of the work in Westbrook's absence.  Buckhalter has never been the model of health, so if you have room in deep leagues and are concerned about Westbrook, stash Booker away.
