Week Fourteen: Playoff Time!

| More

Week 14 is upon us. It seems like the season started just a few weeks ago. Now it is time for the playoffs for some teams and do or die for others. You need to play your hot hands, push all your chips to the center of the table and go all in.

It’s been a crazy fantasy season to say the least. More injuries and inconsistency from players then I’ve ever seen in one season. Still, I’ve been able to stay strong and make the playoffs in all my leagues. I have 2 playoff games in week 14 with the rest starting in week 15. My money league teams are both treating me well. I have the opportunity to clinch #1 seeds in both leagues with a win this week. Let’s be honest here, the only leagues we care about are our money leagues. It’s enjoyable to get wins in our shark leagues and our other online leagues but nothing beats getting into the playoffs and winning money! It gives us a greater sense of accomplishment because we feel the competition is greater and the stakes are higher.

When trying to decide who should be in your line-ups you need to look at who has been hot at each position over the last three weeks. You must also keep in mind injuries and opportunities.

The charts below are ranked according to Shark League PPR scoring.

The Golden Mug Award

Awarded to the fantasy player who came through for their team.

LaDainian Tomlinson - 177 yds 2TDs, 20 rec yds. Tomlinson put in his best rushing performance since week 6 and he may have saved a few owners’ season. Unlike last year where teams owning LT were usually tops in their league or at least made the playoffs, some are finding it hard to squeak in. In 4 leagues I play in, 2 of the LT owner are on the bubble and the other 2 have missed the playoffs.

Honorable Mention

Adrian Peterson (MIN) - 116 yds 2TDs, 10 rec yds. Peterson came back and produce well. Many did not know how much of a factor he would be but I’m glad I got him in the line-up when I did.

The Urinal Cake Award

Awarded to the fantasy player who you would like to, well you know.

Antonio Gates - 1 rec for -1 yds. What a horrible stat. After Gates played great last week with 105 yds and 2TDs he may have ended some owners playoff hopes.

Dishonorable Mention

Calvin Johnson - 1 rec 17 yds. The next Moss? Rookie of the year? Matt Millan hit the jack pot? None of this is relevant yet. Calvin hasn’t been the receiver most people grabbed early in drafts. After a good week 12, he didn’t become a factor in week 13. With Roy Williams out, teams will look to contain Johnson. Let’s see if he can step up and produce.

MATCH-UPS

The match-ups I like this week for QBs:

Kellen Clemens against the Browns- The match up is great every week. If a QB can take advantage of it, stats can be had by the truck load. Cleveland has given up 704 yds passing in the last 3 games. An average of 235 yds a game and they have given up 5TDs the last 2 weeks with 5INTs.

Josh McCown against the Packers- This may be McCown’s last start before the Russell era begins. The Green bay defense hasn’t played well against the past in the last 3 weeks. They are giving up 791 yds over those 3 weeks or 264 yds per game. They have also surrendered 7TDs with 4INTs. This could be an upset game for the packers if Brett Favre doesn’t play and the team is still thinking about last weeks lose to the Cowboys.

The match-ups I like this week for RBs:

Ryan Grant against the Raiders. Grant ran well last week against a good Dallas defense and this week he gets the best run match-up in the league. Over the last 3 weeks Oakland has given up 414 yds rushing and 7TDs. They are allowing 138 yds a game on the ground.

Clinton Portis against the Bears. I think Portis will be running angry and with hunger after an emotional week in Miami. The last second lose to Buffalo is also motivation to produce well this week. He gets a good match-up against a Bears defense that has been soft against the run the last 3 weeks. They are surrendering 405 yds rushing and 5TDs in those games giving up an average of 135 yds a game.

The match-ups I don’t like this week for QBs:

Jay Cutler against Chiefs. Cutler is currently the 12th fantasy QB. This week he faces a Kansas city team that has been playing well on defense lately. Over the last 3 weeks, the Chiefs are allowing just 490 yds passing and 1TD and has 2INTs. That’s just 163 yds per game over that period.

Kyle Boller against the Colts. Boller and company almost pulled off an upset defeat of the Patriots on Monday night. They get another tough match-up with Indianapolis who have given up just 581 yds passing over the last 3 weeks with 4TDs and 3 INTs. They are allowing an average of 193 yds passing in those games.

The match-up I don't like this week for RBs:

Frank Gore against the Vikings. After his 1st 100+ yd game in week 12, Gore was quiet against the Panther rushing for 58 yds. This week he faces a Viking team that has been playing very well. Over the last 3 weeks they have given up just 159 yds and 1TD. That’s only 53 yds rushing per those 3 games.

Kevin Jones against the Cowboys. Jones should be mentioned for dishonorable mention as well with his 1 yds performance last week. He has had 3 poor games over the last 4 weeks. In the last 3 weeks Dallas has given up only 192 yds rushing and 2TDs. They are averaging just 64 yds rushing against them since week 11.

Week thirteen’s brew of choice was Molson Ice. I haven’t had this beer in probably over a decade. Back when people where into the whole ice craze like Bud Ice. Remember the ad where a penguin stalked Bud Ice drinkers and stole their beer while singing "Dooby-dooby-doo.." Yeah, I know. Not the greats of commercials. As always drink responsibly and don’t drink and drive.

Good luck to everyone in the playoffs! (Unless your playing me)
