This stuff has really grown on me over the last few months.

Love the taste.

Love how it smoothes out over ice.

Love how it doesn't tear my insides out like other types of alcohol.

Anybody have any advice on good brands or methods?

p.s. - hey 5:00, cheers!

Somewhere in here is a thread dedicated to Whiskey/Bourbon.

I'll let someone else find it.

For me, I love Makers Mark for every day drinking. For special occasions, I go with Bookers.

I would add Woodford Reserve as one of the Best. And I think in Chit-chat there is a whiskey buzz thread that has a lot of info ...plus drunk posting...so I have heard.

There is a lot of good bourbon out there. Black Maple Hill is a blend but still excellent. Takes on a very different flavor over ice.

I usually have a bottle of Makers Mark or Knob Creek for regular drinking. Will usually have another bottle on hand for special occaissions. Right now its a Bookers Small batch (I think).

Find a good whiskey bar and sit down and try a bunch.

Don't go with any of that cheap nasty stuff... the only type of Whiskey/Bourbon I would drink is Templeton Rye.

Good - not Bourbon ( which you state).

I love the rye whiskeys - for Bourbon Rye try the Basil Hayden - very good.

Basil Hayden

Almost as good as a good Scotch.

For cost:quality ratio, my favorite is Buffalo Trace.

Elmer T. Lee is a very economical single barrel and I was pretty impressed with its taste.

Bulleit Bourbon has a cool look but was disappointed by the taste. It was meh.

Old Forester has an annual series called Birthday Bourbon. Each year is a different batch with a different profile. It's kind of fun. I think I tried the 2009 vintage. It's alright. Has some peatiness like a Scotch and doesn't totally feel like a bourbon, but it's interesting. I wouldn't buy another bottle, although I hear it's the weakest of the years.

For my money, there's nothing better than Old Harper:

I usually have a bottle of one or other, although right now the only whiskey in the house is a Canadian blend

Whiskey over ice cream, yummy, especially homemade ice cream.

I can't tell you how many times I got drunk on Kentucky Deluxe before I was old enough buy.

Finally a subject I actually know something about!

Many good choices already listed. I'd add Eagle Rare (and Eagle Rare 17 if you can find it).

Woodford is a little too oakey for me but I still order one occasionally especially as a before dinner drink....when someone else is buying.

I think the best I've ever had is Southern Comfort. Clearly I'm not doing it right
