it is always funny to me when people say "oh its 500 million now, i should buy a ticket" as if 500 million is really all that negligible from 50 million to a person making <100k a year. like, pshh 50 million, thats not enough for the type of aspirations i have. i'll only spend a buck on a ticket when the jackpot is like 10 times that much.
I usually go this route and only buy when the jackpot is high (Though we have been buying a little more often of late since we can buy them at the bowling alley). The reason, I only spend a dollar here and there and not a dollar a couple times a week (So over the course of the year, I spend like $15 on lottery and not $102, which pays for a few rounds of golf). Sure I could live nicely if I won the tiny jackpot, but the odds are astronomical, so I might as well save the money. Though playing when the jackpot is huge is worth the gamble and only has me buy lottery tickets on occasion. It is fun to fantasize about what we will do if we win.
My horseshoe league did this every week for 32 weeks. So we played $16 a week for 32 weeks (So we spent $512 and we won a grand total of $12 for the entire period). Just helped prove to me how impossible it is, so why keep feeding money into it twice a week (In Ohio we have Powerball and Mega Millions and many people play both and with Powerball now $2, you are in for $6 a week just to play 1 chance, which will run you $312 a year. But many people play more than 1 shot per game and spend thousands of dollars a year for many years with a greater chance of being struck by lightning while being eaten by a shark.
