I'd give it a shot except it wont run 99% of my programs.

Exacty my issue. I don't need to make more work for myself on the computer.

Unless I have time to play around, but that would require free time.

Hmmm... so really no love for Linux in the tank, huh?

Been thinking about tinkering with it on a VM just for schitzangiggles, but was curious if anyone had any recommendations on what version to use or 'flavor' as I've heard apparently oft-bored hard core computer geeks call the different builds.

I have it on an old PC... currently in runs Ubuntu...

I'm going to completely plagiarize an analogy I read somewhere...

A guy wants to buy a toy car:

consumer: I heard Lego makes a nice car.

Geek: They do it's great, I love it because I can make exactly like I want.

consumer: That sounds really cool! maybe I'll try it!

2 weeks later...

consumer: Dude, I just got Lego. This thing sucks, it comes in pieces and you have to put it together. It also didn't come with any instructions!! wth! This crap blows!

Geek: Just go online, the community can help you figure out how to put it together.

Consumer: I just want a car! I don't want to put it together. Why couldn't they just give me the car already built?

Geek: So you can take it apart and put it back together. That way you can make it work exactly the way you want it too.

Consumer: Dude, I told you I just want a car to play with. I don't want to build, or take it apart!

Geek: Then why did you get Lego and not Hot Wheels?


Ok now substitute Lego for for Linux and Hot Wheels for Windows...

I do all my work on Linux.

I can't imagine it's a good plan to use as a home computing platform.

The only guy I know who uses Linux is a pretentious computer snob who thinks he knows more than you if a computer is involved. I think most of the Linux users are the same. They bad mouth windows, justifiably in many cases, and talk up the joy's of running Linux instead.

Yet they spend all their free time tweaking and programming and changing things etc. I've had very few problems with Windows. Linux is for people who like to program operating systems as a hobby, not for people who just want to check their freaking e-mail and play command and conquer: Red alert

Thats my take, and the Lego/hotwheels analogy is about perfect.

For me, this would just be to satisfy my curiosity and learn something outside of Windows. Maybe I'll even appreciate MS more.

One of the guys I work with came in and first thing he did when he started was take the computer we gave him and install Linux.
I had the pleasure a couple weeks ago of needing to use his computer since he was on vacation and it took forever to burn some drivers to a damn CD, just because I wasn't familiar at all with the menus, commands, etc.
So that's kinda where all this started.

I did prefer Legos when I was younger, but I have no desire to be labeled 'pretentious computer snob'.

Otherwise, I'd just go buy a Mac.

It gets easier to use every month, but it still has a learning curve. Some big advantages over windows, namely security and stability.

When you say it won't run "99% of the programs you use", that may be true, but there are probably equivalent programs for 98% of those programs you're running.

No Photoshop? Use the Gimp.
No Office? Use OpenOffice.
No IE? Use Firefox.

Same IM clients, and most of the software people use. If you like unix and have a unix background it should be very easy to pick up, and it is a lot of fun if you're a geek (like me) who enjoys the struggle involved.

Ubuntu has made it much, much easier to use than it used to be. The stuff that works is great. The biggest problem I still have with Linux is that fixing something that doesn't work can take a ton of time and effort, but that's also the best way to learn.

I think OSX is the best of both worlds - stability and security from unix, UI design from Apple, and pretty broad software support.

Windows is a great platform for productivity, while Linux is a great platform for draining productivity. If you're set on doing it, last I checked there was a free version of Microsoft Virtual PC that you could download if you don't have a spare machine laying around. I wouldn't screw with dual boot in the first pass.

That said, I wish the WINE people (if they're still around) would put together an MS Intermediate Language (.NET assembly) VM.
