Hey Marty,

You do realize that the Pirates magic number to not lose 100 games this year is down to 18 games. \:D/

I'm not really sure where Pittsburgh would be looking to add.. Maybe a SP if someone begins to slip in July. Maybe someone to take even more time away from Overbay.

I think they're hoping Alvarez can right the ship and be an offensive spark to the lineup near the end of the month or earlier. I mean he can't get much worse than he was when he was up.

To me I think the Pirates may be weary to trade away some of their minor league talent that they've worked so hard to build up in the Huntington era. That's what is going to make them contenders the next couple years, those minor leaguers becoming everyday players.

I could be wrong though, the Pirates have not been in the position to make moves at the deadline in quite some time so I'll be interested to see.

With the exception of OF Starling Marte, the Pirates farm system really has no position players that would be valued in a trade (I assume they will not trade C Tony Sanchez). I think it's also safe to assume they will not trade any of their upside pitching talent like Taillon, Allie, Heredia etc.

I think it comes down to them not having the bullets in the farm system to make any kind of meaningful trade this year - even assuming they wanted to add a bat in the outfield or at 1B.

We'll find out a lot about them in the next 2 weeks. The Pirates have a 10 game stretch against the Cardinals, Braves and Phillies starting July 22 who are something like a combined 45 games over .500. Let's see where they are July 30.

The other thing that the Pirates are going to bump up into at the end of August and early September is their starting pitching staff innings.

While their staff has some quasi-veterans on it like Maholm, Correia, Karstens and Morton, none of their starters with the exeption of Maholm pitched more than 120 innings last year and a few pitched under a 100 innings. They're going to have some tough decisions on how big an innings jump they want their current starting staff to undertake and what impact that has on their health next year and beyond.

I agree with L4H....everyone here is saying they need a bat....I think they need an innings eating starter to supplement the rotation - even if it means going to a 6 man rotation at some point so half their staff doesn't end up needing Tommy John surgery next year.

Pirates prospect Luis Heredia signed out of Mexico has started pitching in the Gulf Coast rookie league games and made 3 appearances in the last week and a half. He's 16 years old.

Hopefully he can develop, they gave him a hefty signing bonus for a 16 year old kid..

From a need standpoint, the Pirates could use a SS for the next couple years.. Cedeno's a good defender but his bat leaves much to be desired.. Hardy from Baltimore's out there but the O's seem to be interested in re-signing him and like Steve said are farm system's top heavy and Pittsburgh won't deal any of them for a guy thats a FA at the end of the year.

Veras is usually reliable, couple that with a tough call at the plate and that'll give the three runs to lose the game. Hope they can get this one today, gotta take 2 of 3 from Houston everytime they play this season.

Six wins against any team could be shocking with the Astros

I'm not really sure Beltran is what the Bucs need. I really don't want the Pirates to give up the prospects that the Mets want in the deal, because to me, Pittsburgh's ahead of schedule, and they're more than an OF bat away from winning long term. I'm not sold on sacrificing what they have at the top for a guy that I don't think they'd have a chance at signing in the off season. Not worth it imo.
