Sharon Simmons, a grandmother of two that will turn 56 in May, has been working on routines with a former Cowboys Cheerleader in hopes of making the squad for the 2012 season.

Other than age, Simmons, who is an author, doesn’t see any difference between her and the tough competition she’ll face on May 5 when tryouts begin.

“On stage, I blend right in with women in their 20s, 30s and up,” she recently told CBS DFW. Simmons also said there is “absolutely no difference” between her body and those of the 20-somethings on the current team.

“I thought, that’s something I never tried,” Simmons said. “I always wanted to try out. I got real close in my early 20s, but got busy raising my daughter. And I thought, why not now?”

The Carrollton resident has been competing in fitness competitions since she turned 50, according to her Web site. And judging by the videos posted on her site it doesn’t seem like a lame publicity stunt. Simmons appears to be in very good shape.

“I love life. I’m having a blast. I’m having a ball,” she said.

Cincinnati Ben-Gals' Laura Vikmanis is considered the oldest NFL cheerleader at 42.
