I assume 8 strikeouts per inning pitched is supposed to be 8 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched.

So what I do in my home league where every team needs a Pirate and Cutch goes #1 overall most likely?

Good stuff.

None, he values Kershaw as a 4th rounder. Wouldn't draft him before then. I think you're absurd to take any pitcher before the 5th, but that's just me.

I can't quite agree about that. I would not reach for a pitcher except in the cases for a Verlander, Kershaw, and Halladay. I am of the belief that these three guys are as sure of a thing as a pitcher can be. I wouldn't pay a first round price but in the back end of the second I would not feel dirty taking any of them. An ace to anchor the staff can't be understated at the end of the year. To know that you never have to worry about a pitcher having a series of epic meltdown's is peace of mind that I can put them in there without hesitation. If you wait on your ace and it ends up being someone outside of round 5, you are drafting with more inherent risk. As good as the players you could be taking after that round, there are some question marks. My rule of thumb is wait to fill out your staff but do try to get at least one arm in the first five rounds. Nothing wrong with a Lee, Felix, Lincy, Haren, Weaver and Lester on your roster to be your ace as opposed to having guys like Strasburg, Gallardo, Moore, or Romero although all are aces there is a higher probability to having to monitor and watching them for warts. Even Bumgarner who I love this year has that bust factor that can scare me a little. If I had my way, I would pick one in the first five rounds and then wait to fill the staff after grabbing bats. Also I would wait for closers, this can't be said enough. When the closer run happens just keep to yourself, grab another bat, there will be plenty of other closers in the next few rounds. Santos, Nathan, League, and Bentencourt may not look sexy but they will give you what you need for that one cat.

I also wanted to note that having a perfect draft is more important to some owners than others. I myself need a more complete draft with as few bad picks as possible as I typically am not as shrewd with trades and in season free agent pickups to compensate to repair those mistakes. So I don't take as many risks early in the draft though I will draft my usuals for my own personal reasons and depending on my love affairs some of those guys will be risky and some more sure things but I like to know that I got the guys I truly wanted.

Every draft that I have ever done, I have never picked a starting pitcher higher than the third round. The first two rounds are for hitters that can cover 4 if not all 5 of your normal H2H or ROTO league categories. I really think Halladay is gonna have a tough-go at it this year. Call me crazy, but it seems that the Phillies always have something happen to 3 to 4 players just before the season starts. They've already lost Howard for who-knows-long, and now Utley is having a nagging injury as well. Verlander, I think, had a "who-would-have-guessed-it" kind of year. It's definately not going to happen again.

Yep, my bad. Thanks for the note. I'll edit when I'm not badly hungover like I am right now.

Thanks for clarifying, the next part (may be up tomorrow night - depends on that hangover) details why. There's no denying how awesome the top pitchers are, but that's not relevant when you can build a chapmionship caliber staff by waiting to fill out your staff.

But seriously I am totally on the mccutchen/Stanton bandwagon but picking 8th neither were possible. :( gotta figure out a trade for mccutchen. but I follow oar and Marty all year long for baseball tips :thumbright:

He had his ups and downs last season.. At worst I think you get the counting numbers (Maybe not 89 RBIs, not sure he'll be hitting 3 that much if at all) you had last year with an average in the .270s with the upside he could go high 20s in HRs and steal 30 bases. AVG I think will end up around .285.
