Spanish Unemployment Hits Record 24.4%

"The number of unemployed people reached 5,639,500 at the end of March, with the unemployment rate hitting 24.4%, the national statistics agency said.

The figures came hours after rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded Spanish sovereign debt.

Official figures due out on Monday are expected to confirm that Spain has fallen back into recession."

haha "recession" - yeah, that's what it is. i don't understand why spain doesn't just fudge the stats like some other nations do... unless the fudge is already baked in to that 25%. but who cares... that's spain. things are infinitely better here in the usa.

Falling home prices drag new buyers under water

More than 1 million Americans who have taken out mortgages in the past two years now owe more on their loans than their homes are worth, and Federal Housing Administration loans that require only a tiny down payment are partly to blame.

That figure, provided to Reuters by tracking firm CoreLogic, represents about one out of 10 home loans made during that period.

It is a sobering indication the U.S. housing market remains deeply troubled, with home values still falling in many parts of the country, and raises the question of whether low-down payment loans backed by the FHA are putting another generation of buyers at risk.

Poll: Feds' favorability at 15-year low

A decade ago, Americans felt similarly about their local, state and federal governments. No longer.

Today, just one in three has a favorable view of the federal government — the lowest level in 15 years, according to a Pew survey. The majority of Americans remain satisfied with their local and state governments — 61 percent and 52 percent, respectively — but only 33 percent feel likewise about the federal government.

Employment in Spain is weird so those figures are skewed compared to others. Those unemployed may mean they are actually part time employed or on a decent gov stipend, and part time employement can still mean 35-40 hours a week. Being employed "full time" there is almost like hitting the lotto, hard to do, but once you score its almost guaranteed employment for the rest of your career, and all the benefits.
