White Sox acquired 3B Kevin Youkilis and cash from the Red Sox for RHP Zach Stewart and UTIL Brent Lillibridge.

A monster upgrade over Brent Morel and Orlando Hudson, Youk has escaped a diminished role in Boston and assumed an everyday gig with the contending White Sox. Chicago's third basemen entered play Sunday with a pathetic .466 OPS, easily the worst mark in the majors. The move is obviously a coup for Youkilis' fantasy value. The veteran missed nearly a month earlier this season with a back strain and has batted just .233 with four homers and 14 RBI, but we would expect him to improve in his new surroundings. Youkilis is earning $12 million this season with a $1 million buyout of next season's $13 million salary. Boston covered a bit more than $5.5 million of the roughly $7 million owed to Youkilis through the end of the year.

The Sox basically gave him away as they got little in return and save about $2M between what they aren't picking up in 2012 salary and his 2013 buyout which the ChiSox will most certainly do.

It was a good move for the Sox on the chance he has anything left in the tank (coin flip) but only because their 3B production has been horrible.

Rumors of him to the Pirates never made any sense given the production they're getting out of Alvarez and McGahee coupled with McGahee platooning at 1B w/Jones.

A good 2 week period from each guy is considered "production" that would stop them from looking at Youkilis? Are standards in Pittsburgh really that low?

Youk landing in Pittsburgh never seemed like a legitimate possibility, but it certainly wasn't because the Pirates don't badly need to upgrade 3B.

Shortstop is a much more pressing need than 3B at this point if we're prioritizing upgrading one of their positional needs on offense.

Harrison gives you a little speed and pop but you sacrifice a little D to replace Barmes.

The addition of the 2nd wild card is going to make it tricky to swing a July deadline trade and there's nada even close in their minors to helping at SS this year.

Combine that with the $5M per that Barmes is under contract for this year and next and it's unlikely they'll make a move to shore up the SS spot.

Great move for both squads... Boston doesn't need him anymore and Chicago is desperate for even a decent 3rd baseman.

Fantasy guys may want to try and grab him as the change of scenery will do wonders, IMO.
