Patriots signed TE Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year, $1.2 million contract.
Profootballtalk reports Shiancoe will receive $400,000 guaranteed and can make another $800,000 in incentives, typical of a veteran signing just prior to training camp. The addition of Shiancoe suggests the Patriots aren't counting on Daniel Fells (leg) to contribute any time soon. The Eagles, lacking veteran depth at the position, had also offered Shiancoe a contract. Don't look for fantasy value behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in New England.

If this is just an insurance policy for them in the event Gronk's ankle doesnt hold up then fine but Shiancoe is a good TE and see him taking some receptions from the other guys.. Is there something we dont know about Gronk's rehab?

Of all the teams needing a TE... didn't think NE was one of them.

they've been looking at and signing TE's all offseason. could be something, could be nothing.

BB obsesses over TE's. I think this means nothing in regards to Gronk's or Hernandez's production. They'll be on the field constantly.

:-k as a hernandez owner i am a bit concerned. Although Shiancioe isnt much of a threat his presence alone leaves some questions

One of the two TE's is going to take a hit. Herndz or Gronks. That is if Ballard and Shanks make the team.

At this point Gronks Welker LLoyd then 4-6 option. I wouldn't want a 4-6th option on my team. That or Bills draft pick coffers are dwindling down and they are thinking of trading Herndz to refill for next year.

I don't see it like that. I see Hernandez as the eventual replacement for Welker. They'll pay Hernandez when they have to and only then. He's a cheap keep right now. Then, move him in the slot as they'll have all these TE's to pick and choose from. He's the perfect replacement for Welker, IMHO.

Maybe BB wants to run some 5,6,7 TE sets; a full O-line of nothing but TEs.

I think Ballard is out for the year due to injury. I don't see Gronk or Hernandez' value dropping .... BB will have 3 TE sets and he will have the extra TE primarily blocking with an occasional pass to keep defenses guessing....

Lloyd is the 4th option in that offense, and one that's probably not worth a spot on a fantasy team this year.

I'm far less confident in Hernandez's hands than I am in Welker's. I remember more drops by Aaron than Wes. I want my slot receiver to be someone whose palms sweat mucilage, not butter.

Could it be a pick up simply to keep him off other rosters through training camp, then cut him after? It seems like a cheap enough move to do that. Sign him, put him through your training camp, then cut him, and now whatever team does pick him up didnt get the benefit of getting him used to their system.

Shiancoe is a blocker more than a player. I would not be worried.

Hernandez is pretty much a WR now. Shiancoe is Gronkowski insurance (as a blocker).
