I'm trying to find an alternative for the old draft lottery to determine draft position in our redraft league. Something that involves less luck, and more strategy/skill.

I have tried to scrap the draft, and switch to an auction, but the rest of the league wants to stick with a draft.

Any creative ideas to help determine draft position?

Maybe based on the previous years results.

Play a round of poker for it.

Bid to get rights to select spot. Throw money in pot.

Don't do anything that ties to last year's results since it's a redraft and reboots every year.

Maybe not a whole lot different, but...

We draw numbers and use those to pick where your draft spot is.

Example...if I pick #1 out of the hat, I can pick whichever draft spot I choose. Say I pick drafting in the #4 slot. Then the 2nd pick gets anywhere from 1 to 3, 5 to 12.

Just a little different and lets people use a little strategy or maybe get in/out of divisions that other players are in. It can shake things up as some people like to draft at the end of the round.

We used to do it this way. It's a little better than random.

I'll tell you what NOT to do (we started this in my league this year and I hate it)

In a 12-team league, 6 teams make the playoffs (hate it).

The six teams who don't make the playoffs have their own tournament.

The order of finish in the "losers" tournament get to pick next year's draft slot.

Well, this year, those six guys took the top 5 picks and the 12-hole.

Since I can make the playoffs every year with half my brain tied behind my back, I will never again choose in the top half of the draft.

I agree if it reboots, but I dont see a promblem if its a redraft with the same guys.

Isn't rebooting the definition of a redraft?

I thought he was talking about with a new group of people, like if half the league turned over the next year or something, I probably read it wrong.

he could also try a week 17 free for all. Where you take your starting requirments and use it like a draft only league.

Remember Im only talking about something better than a randomizer.

That's a pretty cool idea.

We are going try something different this year in our league.

In the past we would pull names out of the hat and that person could pick any open spot available in the draft. This year we are going to select one name out of the hat and that person will be able to choose the draft position for any team (cannot choose your own team). Then that team will select the draft position of any of the remaining teams.

I like the idea, but in my surly homer league live draft that would probably be a receipt for mayhem.

I've got a league with a trio of brothers and an ex-wife and a pair of brothers with a brother-in-law in it.

That would not be pretty.

Last place last year gets to pick their draft position first. First place from last year gets to pick their draft position last... and so on.

You're encouraging tanking towards the end of the year.

That's why I never had a problem with random: either random slot or random drawing for selection of spot.

Fact is, you can make the playoffs from any draft position.
