The Steelers activated veteran nose tackle Casey Hampton and veteran running back Rashard Mendenhall from the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) List, the team announced today.

Hampton is in his 12th season with the Steelers and has played in 157 career games with 146 career starts. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Hampton was recovering from a knee injury in the offseason.

Mendenhall is in his fifth year with the Steelers after originally being the team’s first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Mendenhall has two 1,000-yard rushing seasons and has amassed 3,367 yards rushing in his first four years. He was recovering from a knee injury that he suffered in the 2011 regular-season finale at Cleveland.

OK, so NOW how do projections change since he's off the PUP? Hmmm....

The issue to me is the health of Redman here. I had actually crept Dwyer onto my draft possible list as a late round flyer if Redman was out.

The Steelers have activated RB Rashard Mendenhall (ACL surgery) and NT Casey Hampton (ACL surgery) from active/PUP.

Mendenhall's activation is a pretty big shocker as plugged-in reporters such as ESPN's Adam Schefter and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette believed he was a lock to open the year on PUP. GM Kevin Colbert even stated that was the likeliest scenario. Bouchette suggested that Mendenhall came off PUP in a "desperation" move by a Steelers team riddled with running back injuries. Mendenhall is unlikely to regain feature back duties, but his return throws a major wrench into Isaac Redman's already shaky fantasy value. The Steelers' backfield is shaping up as a fantasy situation to avoid before the late rounds of drafts.

He can't be ready early in the season, but maybe a stash for a play off run?

I was thinking that (playoff stash) as well as a late round keeper stash for next year. Who is to say he doesn't come back during this season and become the Mendenhall of 2010 or 2011? Is that crazy thinking? Not total stats but stats per game, and thus allowing him an opportunity for a feature back gig in 2013? That'd be a nice value keeper.

Same here. It's a mess of a situation that I will be avoiding at all costs. There isn't enough value there with any of those RBs to justify where they will probably be drafted.

Dwyer or redman is who should looking at. Steeler MO is finding rbs they have on the roster that have gotten for cheap. Steelers are looking to the future for a guy they can keep for the next couple years cheap. Mend will be gone in free agency after this year.

Stashing a "decent" at best back for weeks on end is not a good idea. Avoiding the entire backfield.

Menden-CHOKE has killed me the last 2 seasons. He is all yours for the taking.

What do you mean by choke? His game by game stats were pretty darn good for what likely cost a 2nd round pick according to ADP in 2010 and 2011. Very few dud games at all. What am I missing here?

Put aside what a player has done, good or bad, for you in the past and draft BPA.

I'd still love to know how he choked! :-k

Stat of the day I heard today.. He's scored more rushing TDs (22) over the last 2 seasons than ALL BUT THREE other RBs (Turner, McCoy and AP I believe). Choke? More like clutch.
