From roto:

CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora reports Lions GM Martin Mayhew has been calling other teams in search of a running back.
This report suggests not only that the organization is aiming higher than free agent Ryan Grant, but also that Kevin Smith's ankle injury could end up leaving his status up in the air for the season opener. Smith missed practice again on Tuesday. Saints power back Chris Ivory makes a lot of sense; he's fourth on the depth chart, and undrafted rookie Travaris Cadet has impressed in preseason action.

MJD would be too expensive for them.

Yeah, most likely they are up against the cap.

MJD is too expensive for them, and the Jags aren't going to trade him unless they get a great deal.

One of the New Orleans backs is a possibility (saw a Chris Ivory rumor), or maybe one of the Washington guys (just guessing). But MJD is not a probably option.

Because any team would be dumb enough to take that dude? Jimmuh Irsay says f that and he's drunker than Jerruh.

Hmm... on second thought most if not all of those guys aren't guaranteed roster spots and could be available tomorrow. Why broadcast your intentions and dangle picks instead if you are targeting players who are on the fringes of other teams depth charts? Right before cut down day. Maybe they are looking to do something big? The Lions could be a offensive juggernaut with a serious back to go with Stafford and Megatron...

Just from a personal "that would be an interesting fantasy situation" standpoint, I'd love to see them go and get Tashard Choice from Buffalo. He's their third string so it doesn't seem like it would cost a ridiculous amount. He's also playing on a 1 year 700,000 dollar contract so it's not like they'd be tied to a large multi-year contract.

As far as that article- Starks and Moreno make no sense to me (two guys trying to get over injurys...they have that). Woodhead is one dimensional but starting week 3 might be a good complement, but the Pats don't let many people go cheap. Ivory has promise. Bell is unexciting, but at least he's cheap.

Know it might not be a possibility and half of my hoping is simply because I own the guy on one of my teams, but what about Pierre Thomas? Not sure about the details of his contract and if it would even be possible, but the saints backfield is crowded, and he would make a great fit in Detriot.

Why wouldn't carolina trade either dwill or jstew? I don't know enough about salary caps to know if this a dumb question.

Yeah, I think the fact picks are being dangled indicates that they are looking for somebody who is not thought to be available tomorrow. There will be lots of good players out tomorrow and I'm sure they'll be looking for help there too. But just saying, why dangle picks right before cut down day?

Thomas is owed over 2.1, 2.1, and 2.5 over the next three years...Lions are currently 3 mil or so under the cap...I don't see them wanting to give up a bunch in the first place but especially to a guy who will put them up against the cap that they are strapped to for the next three years. Ivory would be much cheaper 540,000 this year and is a restricted free agent next year.

Well they just handed Stewart a 9 million dollar signing bonus on a contract that is guaranteed for 22.5 million...so he's not going anywhere. Williams was just signed last year to a deal that has him making 5.25, 4.75, 5.75, and 6.75 million the next four years. The Lions won't take on that kind of money for a 29 year old running back. If I remember right, Williams' guaranteed money is up after this year so he'll probably be cut loose in the next year or two.
