Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie threw down the gauntlet regarding coach Andy Reid on Thursday. In a statement that was both obvious and unnecessary, Lurie said that Reid would be fired if the Eagles go 8-8 again this season.

We expect this quote to be repeated often if the Eagles are hovering around .500 at any point after the first quarter of the season. It's one more thing for Reid to answer, but he handled the remarks just like you would think on Thursday night after the Eagles' final preseason game.

At what point this season do the Eagles implode?

Do they do well enough for Reid to keep his job for 2 more years?

Or do the Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys agree to throw 1 game each to ensure 5 more years of division success?

You have to love the NFL.

Sons dies. Attend funeral. 2 weeks later perform or your fired. Not For Long. Jerry Glanville was right.

If Reid was fired, he could have another NFL head coaching gig within 24 hours.

I am very confident they will start off on the right foot.

After Joe Banner is hired - come to Cleveland, Andy!

I heard this today on Colin Cowherd's show. He said Lurie's comment was in response to Reid's agent saying Reid had a job for life with the Eagles as long as Lurie was owner. I am a Reid/Eagles fan, but in that context, can't blame Lurie for the remark.

I don't doubt he would find another job in an instant.

But I don't blame the Eagles if they wish to wipe their hands clean of him. It seems he's over-extended himself... taking on GM'ing the team, acting as head coach, acting as game-day play-caller, and taking on pet projects (Vick). Not to mention in this latest "dynasty" push to keep his job, he's signed all these big-name players to large contracts that will probably implode the team in a few years.

And he's ridden pretty happily on the [defensive] house that Jim Johnson built. And then there's the McDermott firing and Castillo hiring.

He'll never accept a demotion, so it's probably far easier to just wipe their hands clean. Of course, with his son's death and this latest incident I wouldn't be surprised if the feeling is reciprocal at the end of the season.

That said, Lurie will probably hire some scrub and tank the team for 15 years.

Not the best comparison, but he's the Mike Holmgren of coaches. Keep him focused and he'll do good.

Good. Bum should have been fired years ago. Only when he's gone does this team even have a chance at a championship.

Don't mind him as a GM so much (if we can get a new LB scout), but his play calling and halftime adjustments have always been atrocious.

Yes, we will be bad for a few years after he's gone, but he needs to get off the sideline.

yep, I think maybe the only thing that would prevent it is if he would want to take a break.

lol newsflash....if you have the pieces in place to make a run and have SB upside....and go 8-8 back to back years...yes, you need to be accountable for that. This whole thing is common sense and overblown.

Over paid athletes deminish a Coachs ability to motivate. I feel sorry for the coaching staffs in the league. Theyre trying to motivate guys that could buy them. Good luck trying to motivates selfish millionaires.

In Reid's case he is largely responsible for the "overpaid players" on the Eagles, is he not?

Having said that "this is the life they have chosen". If they wanted to be disciplinarians they could coach in college.

In the MLB, NBA and NFL this issue exists. It is what it is.
