I love sports and I love broadcasting.

So I'm probably less critical of sportscasters than the average guy on here.

But who is this Mike Mayock guy and how the hell did he get the gig to be the "color" man on a weekly prime time game?

It's not that he doesn't know his football. It's just that he's humorless and, well, colorless.

I know the NFL Network is basically a second-rate operation, but couldn't it have found someone a helluva lot better for a national telecast that draws millions of viewers a week?

I think Mayock is one of the best in the business, he makes Notre Dame games (I have to sit through all of them) watchable.

^^ this. but delete the ND crap.. I don't have to watch them. He did all the pre-season Vikes games up until the ND gig and this one. This past pre-season I missed him greatly with the mindless ham-bones they had calling the games.

I'm only going off of cursory knowledge here and biased opinion, but there are few in the business who truly know what they're talking about; top to bottom. Mike Mayock is one of those select few. He makes the guys who do breakdowns on ESPN look like they're in little league, when given the chance to illustrate the mechanics of the plays and game situations.

I don't disagree, and stated as much in my original post.

But broadcasting is an art, not a science. And Mayock is artless.

I don't really wanna hear art, I want to listen to someone who can break down football.

x2.

Maycocks a lot better than some of the other bs we've had to put up w/ in the past.

Remember Tony Kornheiser on ESPN primetime? I'd rather watch those games muted.

I love Mayock although tonight I didn't think was one of his best nights in the booth but that's how it goes. Not going to have your A game every time out.

He's at his best when he's breaking stuff down. I actually try to listen to him because he can be very informative at times. Something a lot of guys in the booth lack. They may bring more flair and such to the table, but I don't need every announcer to be Gus Johnson to get the job done.

He seems to know his stuff but I could have swore he uttered the phrase "Don't shoot the clown". WTH does that even mean?

Is that like, "don't shoot the messenger"? Never heard that before. Maybe that's an old time phrase I'm too young(30) to have heard.

there's been much MUCH worse that we've had to endure. remember when NFLN had bryant gumball doing play by play. ugh. i'll take knowledge over personality every day.

i'd much rather listen to mayock than gruden slobbering over everyone or even a lot of former coaches and other former players.

Couldn't watch him in HD made me wanna :pukeright:

Yeah listening to people trying to throw out zingers all the time is a little annoying. This is football not stand up comedy............ well at least now that we have the real refs back. :thumbright:

Broadcasters are each one's own taste. I loved Dennis Miller in the booth on MNF and most people hated him, frankly because they didn't get it. I like Gus Johnson too, nothing wrong with getting excited. The best analysts are the ones that don't talk down to the audience. They give knowledge but do so in a way that isn't condescending. I love listening to Brian Billick for this same reason.

Mayock is much better than most of the analysts. Apart from him talking a little too much, I have no beef with him.

I like Nessler at PBP as well - it's a solid announcing duo IMHO.
