"According to TIME, Goodell recently discussed with Rick McKay, Falcons president and head of the NFL’s competition committee, a radical rule change proposed by Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano. Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt."

My guess is "discussed" = "mocked."

They talk about getting rid of kickers every year. It won't happen.

This is almost like an automatic onsides kick recovery. I understand the rule says they get one shot at a 4th and 15 so it is not exactly like onsides kick, but for a team trailing that has to go to a desperation move it automatically gives them a shot. Or for teams that have a great offense, they could theoretically have their offense on the field for an entire half if they were to convert that 4th and 15 every time. While that is obviously not a high percentage likelihood, it isn't impossible.

I'll probably be the only one to admit this, but I kinda like the concept. Would make for high drama in the 4th qtr of a close game for sure.

They should just eliminate Goodell.

Many laugh at me whenever I bring it up, but seriously, the NFLers are ruining football as we know it.

Precisely. I am not a fan of anything that is going to change the game fundamentally from what it was 100 years ago when it began. Soon, they are going to have to start separating the records of old players who played in the "real" football league and the new players who play in this new "pussified" league.

(not that the league is totally pussified...I mean these guys are still taking a beating out there obviously. But I digress)

Funnier...the tweet I followed to this story this morning said "Will Goodell Save the NFL?"

Seriously?

I can't see them eliminating the kicking game. It is completely pointless. But the TV commercials rule. A team scores ... watch the replays, possibly cut to a commercial if the booth takes long. Kick the point after. Go to the commercials. Come back for the single play of the kickoff ... usually uninteresting. Go to commercials. Come back to the offense and defense on the field.

IMO if a team scores a TD, go away and come back in 5 minutes.

Onsides kicks are really fairly boring plays. They are high drama because the game is on the line and there is uncertainty. But a ball moves 10 yards and everyone dives for it. Someone gets it. If it wasn't for the surprise and the dram, no one would find it that interesting. It is slightly more exciting than the victory formation. But not much.

No way the NFL gives up the commercial breaks though. They want a high scoring thrilling offensive shootout with lots of Ads between the possession changes.

EDIT: I misunderstood the concept. The scoring team ALWAYS lines up and snaps from the 30 yard line. It is a 4th-and-15 equivalent. So the Punter punts and with a 50 yard punt the return man catches it at the 20. A fair catch and it is same as a Kickoff touchback.. So the commercials would run the same as before but the return would switch from taking a kick-off deep to taking a punt shallow. And the drama of the punt would be higher. A punting QB/passing punter would be a great weapon. If the return man is 50 yards downfield there is an 11-to-10 advantage in players if you try a quick pass. Put LB's at the WR slots and 2 TE's. I dunno how it would be planned out but it could be an exciting play.

Reminds me of the crap started with the college OT rules where they just lopped out kickoffs and punts in OT, rooted out 1/3 of the game by removing special teams from play. Most people just sucked it up, crying how they hated ties anyway and it was such a great idea. I can't stand it myself, I don't care how 'exciting' the format appears. 1/3 of the game is gone in OT. That's just not right.

This is no different...Actually it's worse.

Goodall is talking about getting rid of Tries too (extra points).

Next season, an NFL Nike plastic football, probably made overseas by sweatshoppers. The official end of a 100 year affiliation with the leather USA ball maker.

Fans need to get vocal, seriously vocal, and express outrage. It's the only way they will listen.

I'm all for eliminating kickoffs, punts, extra points, and field goals.
