At the conclusion of the league’s quarterly ownership meeting in Dallas, Commissioner Roger Goodell dusted off a concept that rears its head from time to time.

Expanded playoffs.

Goodell said that the owners “teed up” the issue of expanding the playoffs from 12 to 14 or 16 teams, and that the discussions will continue in the coming months.

The use of 16 playoff teams would eliminate the bye weeks, requiring the top two seeds in each conference to play in the wild-card round, which would become a quarterfinal round in the AFC and NFC.

It also suggests that, with a 16-team playoff field, perhaps the NFL will eventually decide to fill vacancies in L.A. and London via expansion.

Queue the Goodall groupies...<Slurp> What a great idea! Somehow this makes the game safer too!

Phhht. Stupid. By the time this clown is done the league will be junk.

Let's see. Goodall became commish in late '06...and NFL attendance has declined ever single year since.

Yet the net worth of the league has increased.

Aside from that, I agree. Terrible idea.

You do know that MLB, even the joke NBA, has better revenue growth than the NFL these last few years? At some point this is going to go too far and alienate enough fans the NFL may actually go backwards.

That's because they were down. How does their net worth compare to the NFL?

Each is less right now. So what anyway.

Even Tagliabue wouldn't back this clown this week. Hell, if Rozelle were alive he'd probably head slap the yabo.

I still think you're a grouchy old bastage that fears almost any change, but I do agree with you that this is a stupid idea. Quite a few have been floated around recently, such as extending the season, Thursday Night Football, changing kickoffs, and so on.

Some ideas are still better for the game, like protecting players from concussions. All in all, I'm not a fan of any of the commissioners in any sport right now (NHL is hands down the most screwed), but they are really just an extension of what the owners want. They will make the appropriate changes if the bottom line suffers.

I still laugh at the 'but but but Goodell!!!" like he's out there, going rogue.

He's carrying the owners' water. They see: more games, more money.

I hate the idea of expanding the playoffs but it'll probably happen eventually. Just like horrid TNF.

Attendance? How much of a problem is it, really? It sounds ominous to go "declining every year!!!" but look at the tickets sold and actual percentage filled and that doesn't look true:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/attendance

Here's what I came up with:
2012 95.4% (14,670,604 seats 13,996,976 tickets sold)
2011 95.2% (17,991,591 / 17,124,389)
2010 94.6% (17,973,332 / 17,007,172)
2009 95.5% (17,953,901 / 17,146,404)
2008 97.0% (17,870,318 / 17,334,276)

Looks pretty robust to me and most of those are presold in the form of PSL's and Season Tickets.

Also, today's HD broadcasts and Sunday Ticket actually DISCOURAGE fans from attending games but I'd wager the 1% to 2% drop in ticket sales are more than offset by that fact Sunday Ticket contract.

There are definitely some folks who are way down on % of tickets sold compared to the rest of the league: Tampa, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Buffalo and Miami.

PW & Zebra are on it. Owners want $, league is fine, we're in a recession, there's inflation.

Goodell has MANY flaws, but running the NFL into the ground is very, very, VERY far from being one of them.

Its not a reduction of league revenue that is the issue, its the owners driving for growth - its why some of them have moved over to English Premier League. Kroenke, Glazer & Lerner from the NFL - with Lerner abandoning the NFL completely - and John W.Henry & Ellis Short also jumping in. Owners believe the domsetic market is saturated. That means icnreased revenue can only be gained by

1) Increasing profit margins at home or
2) Expanding the product

The former they believe is as far as it can go. The latter they believe the surface has barely been scratched. I cant comment on the 1st point, but they're right about the 2nd.

The owners will continue to push for a more global market, domestic fans will continue to push for isolationism.

Not judging, arguing or debating the rights or wrongs of it - its just the way it is.

Trying to envision how he would do it, along with a 16 and maybe even 18 game season. The Superbowl would be in late Feb? That's about as far as they can push before competing with college basketball (March Madness).

More teams with a chance to make the playoffs? The wildcard weekend would be huge!

I don't want a nearly irrelevant regular season as seen in the NBA and NHL, that's my problem with it. It being Goodell's idea is not the problem.

Tagliabue did back him in a way, just not in regard to the punishment.

Paul Tagliabue wrote:"My affirmation of Commissioner Goodell’s findings could certainly justify the issuance of fines. However, this entire case has been contaminated by the coaches and others in the Saints’ organization.”

Im w/Elmagister. No other way to read that other than he agrees with his findings, just not the discipline handed out - because of external factors.
