Figured I could start up a thread for Gates himself. If mods want, they could merge this with the other really long Antonio Gates thread.

Quote:
Antonio Gates has reportedly looked "quick and fit" during Chargers OTAs and minicamp.
Speed and elusiveness has certainly been an issue of late for Gates, who has battled foot problems. Over the last two years, he's averaging just 4.0 catches for 47.0 yards per game, serving mostly as a strict red-zone threat. Projecting players to reverse their career arc in their age-33 season is asking for trouble. Despite scoring at least seven touchdowns in nine straight seasons, Gates is our No. 15 fantasy tight end right now.

In every off-season for the past 3 years I have been duped into the hype around Gates being "healthy" and looking "quick". Yet, in the games I've seen, he looks slow as molasses every play. Basically he's out there boxing guys out and using body position to make catches. He has no more wheels, he has no more moves. He doesn't even look like he can jump any more when I watched him last year.

As I have said in a few other threads this off-season, I am 100% not drafting Antonio Gates this year. Instead of a cheatsheet, I might even just show up to the draft with a piece of paper with 2 sentences written on it: "Do Not Draft Antonio Gates" and "Do Not Draft Michael Vick".

TE looks pretty wide open this year... I was glad I stayed away last year and will do so again the upcoming season.

I don't want any Chargers. DA is probably the only one I consider.

This. Their team looks like it is in shambles right now.

Staying far away from:

Gates
Rivers
Meachem
R. Brown
Mathews

Woodhead could be a sneaky value-pick late, especially since Mathews can never seem to stay healthy. Watch though, now with everyone down on Mathews, he'll probably stay healthy and have a monster year. That seems to be his pattern so far. Vincent Brown is intriguing, but I'd rather have Danario Alexander from that WR corps if I'm drafting any of their WRs.

comes down to rivers, he was looking some of the part earlier in his career, but now I don't know. Is he not putting in the work, maybe he has a feeling of entitlement, injury IDK whats up with him.

I think it is injuries and just Father Time catching up to him. He's 33, which is older for the NFL and the TE position. I know Tony Gonzalez has had a long career at TE, but he's always been a physical freak and always been pretty healthy.

Gates just doesn't look like the same guy. He looks old and slow. Some plays it is almost painful to watch him out there. Thankfully, we don't see the Chargers much on TV here.

Never under-estimate the power of garbage-time stats.

Their offense is also in shambles. As well as their o-line. There is nothing good about that team right now other than their Powder Blue alternate jerseys.

I love when people declare they ARE NOT DRAFTING XXXX when it's a player that is a starter with value.

Thanks!

I'll be very happy to take Gates at his current value of TE15 and pair him with someone like Rudolph/Olsen/Cook/Pitta.

That's cool with me. You can have the joy of getting to figure out which 8 games Gates is going to play in and guess which 2 games he will be a startable fantasy player in. I would 100% rather have any 4 of those guys than Gates.

I've been through the ringer with Gates over the past several years. I'd avoid him as a #1 but might grab him as a #2 if he falls far enough. (The #3WR position in my league is a WR/TE Flex).
