Fantasy Analysis

Leftwich will have to win the starting QB job in TB this year. Luke McCown and Josh Freeman will be his pre-season opponents. The winner is worth a look as a late round pick for your No. 2 QB.

Passing: 1300 Yards, 8 TD, 4 INT.
Rushing: 20 Yards, 1 TD.

Injury Report
No current injury information exists for Byron Leftwich

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Talk
Sure, Leftwich looked capable, but thats about it. He is not a QB to hang your season on, by any means. He is just too sloppy of a passer...it is only a matter of time before defenses learn to hang out behind our WRs and wait until Byron overthrows ...

On Monday, the Buccaneers re-signed quarterback Luke McCown before he hit the open market in free agency. According to league sources, the Bucs signed McCown to a two-year contract worth $7.5 million. He received a $2.5 million signing bonus and is ...

Jon Gruden's job with Tampa Bay Buccaneers appears safe -- for now Coach Jon Gruden stepped to the podium Monday morning for the postmortem of his 2008 season. "I feel worse today than I did yesterday," he said. Not as bad, however, as ...

2005 Draft Central
Average Draft Position (ADP) Tracker
Draft Analysis
Round 10, Pick 3
Positives
Byron has some talented WRs and the offense is starting to come together. I expect him to have a breakout season.
Negatives
So far in his short career, he has not thrown a lot of TDs. Also, with the RB situation, it could cause problems for Byron.
Draft Strategy
I needed to get a backup QB as insurance for Peyton. I do not expect him to play much, but I sensed a QB run in the 10th round (I was right) and I am glad I got him when I did. (Contributed by: Greg_Allen)

Round 10, Pick 11
Positives
Leftwich is a pretty consistent player which I like in my QB2. To be able to plug him in when injuries or bye weeks mandate it and know that I can get solid, even if mediocre, production. This season the offense has once again been further expanded and tailored to Leftwich. He'll have the opportunity to call audibles and should have an effective play-action in his arsenal. If he is healthy for 16 games, he should surpass 3,000 yards passing and improve on last season's 15 TDs. That's somewhere right around the top 15 QBs. With his consistency over the past two seasons, he'll make a strong QB2.
Negatives
He is a pocket passer and that is not heavily rewarded in this league. He's not the kind of QB, nor is he in the kind of system, where he'll be able to carry a fantasy team. I consider him to be one of the top QB2 options out there if your QB1 stays healthy and plays most of the season, but if he has to carry the load for your team, it could be a long season.
Draft Strategy
Leftwich is solid and will provide consistency on those weeks when minor injury or a bye week means that Vick is unavailable. As a bonus, the Jags bye week comes in week 7 and Leftwich will be my starter in week 8 while the Falcons sit. An extra week to prepare probably means good things for a QB and an offense. With 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 4 WRs and a TE I now turn my attention to filling in the rest of the roster looking for RB, WR and TE depth along with PK and D/ST starters. (Contributed by: regas14)

Round 9, Pick 4
Positives
Leftwich is a consistent and durable player very much worthy of being a backup fantasy QB. Yet at some point in his NFL career, self included, we expect the kind of season that will put him on the fantasy map. I'm not sure it will be this year, but Leftwich is a player that I believe has upward potential this season.
Negatives
Hardly ever puts up the 'big game' that makes fantasy players attractive, traditionally there is nothing that exciting about the Jaguars passing game.
Draft Strategy
The Jaguars do have some talent at WR for Leftwich to work with, and with the RB situation somewhat muddled, could it be that this is the year that the Jaguars become more of a passing team? Really nothing lost here by taking on Leftwich as my backup QB, everything gained if he can put together a solid fantasy season. (Contributed by: doug_coutts)
