Brew Crew Corner – 2014 Wild Card Weekend

Happy 2014, fellow Sharks. The 2013 season is over and all champions have been crowned. I had three chances at a Super Bowl, only advanced to one and then lost by five points. Still, it has been a good season despite the fact that some of my best players were injured or underperformed. I found gems on the waiver wire that helped me get into the playoffs.

The Golden Mug Award

Awarded to the fantasy players who came through for their team.

Matt Forte22 carries, 110 yards, 2 TD, 4 receptions, 47 yards, TD. Forte racked up 157 yards and three scores in his best game this season. Forte will finish the season as the second-best running back and third overall fantasy player averaging 23.8 fantasy points per game.

Drew Brees 24/31, 381 yards, 4 TD, 2 carries, 8 yards, TD. Brees threw for four-plus touchdowns for the fifth time this season and ran in his third rushing score of the year. This was the first time he scored more than 30 fantasy points since Week 10. Brees finishes as the second-best quarterback and the fourth overall fantasy player, averaging 23.6 fantasy points per game.

LeGarrette Blount – 24 carries, 189 yards, 2 TD. Blount became an unlikely playoff stud, scoring four of his seven touchdowns for the season in the final two games. Blount finishes as the 38th-best running back in fantasy and it will be interesting to see if the New England Patriots keep Blount or if he signs somewhere else as a starter.

The Urinal Cake Award

Awarded to the fantasy players who you would like to, well, you know.

Andre Brown 13 carries, 11 yards, fumble. Most people expected Brown to have a big game as he hadn’t performed well in the previous three games. With
Victor Cruz

out and the New York Giants out of the playoffs, you would have expected Brown to run all day on a bad Washington defense but he was benched after his fumble. Brown is a free agent in 2014, and with
David Wilson

’s health status unknown for next season, Brown could resign with the Giants.

DeSean Jackson 3 catches, 28 yards. Jackson is a boom-or-bust player but often plays well. The last two weeks have been busts for Jackson as he posted seven points last week and just five this week, averaging less than 30 yards in both games. Which Jackson will show up against the New Orleans Saints? The player that can rack up 195 yards and a score or the one that gets shutout of the offense with just 30 yards? Remember, he only had 29 receiving yards in a game where Eagles put up 54 points.

Kirk Cousins – 19/49, 169 yards, 2 INT. If you owned
Tony Romo

and picked Cousins up as a fill-in or thought he was going to put up points like he did in Week 15 against Atlanta, your title hopes were shot down. Cousins finished the game with just six points. If you had a choice between
Kyle Orton

or Cousins, I hope you picked Orton as he finished with 21 fantasy points.

At this time of year I would like to recognize the top studs of 2013. These are the players that lead each position.

Fantasy MVP
Peyton Manning

– 429 fantasy points this season/26.8 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Quarterback
Peyton Manning

– 429 fantasy points this season/26.8 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Running Back
Jamaal Charles

– 414 fantasy points this season/27.6 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Wide Receiver

Demaryius Thomas

– 312 fantasy points this season/19.5 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Tight End
Jimmy Graham

– 429 fantasy points this season/18.6 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Kicker – Stephen Gostkowski – 208 fantasy points this season/13 fantasy points per week.

Fantasy Football Top Defense – Seattle Seahawks – 243 fantasy points this season/15.2 fantasy points per week.

WILD CARD ROUND

AFC

No. 5 Kansas City Chiefs at No. 4 Indianapolis Colts

Back in Week 16 these two teams met with the Colts handling the Chiefs, 23-7. It was an ugly game for
Alex Smith

and the Chiefs.
Jamaal Charles

still did his thing, rushing for 106 yards and a score. Two weeks later these teams meet again and the Chiefs will be better prepared for this game. I don’t see the Colts beating them twice.

Prediction:
Chiefs 28, Colts 21

No. 6 San Diego Chargers at No. 3 Cincinnati Bengals

The Chargers were lucky to make it in but sometimes that is what you need to get through the playoffs. I don’t think their luck will extend much past this week as the Bengals are a more balanced team. The Bengals won the first meeting back in Week 13 in a close contest, 17-10. I expect this to be a close game again with the Bengals taking the game late.

Prediction: Bengals 24, Chargers 20

NFC

No. 6 New Orleans Saints at No. 3 Philadelphia Eagles

These teams did not face each other in the regular season but I expect this to be the highest-scoring game of the week. I’m hoping that this game is non-stop with no punts. I will be using plenty of these players in my daily league lineups. With as much scoring as the Eagles have done lately, I still think the Saints will win this game.
Drew Brees

and Sean Payton will have the advantage with experience, and the Saints defense will make one key play to swing the game.

Prediction: Saints 41, Eagles 35

No. 5 San Francisco 49ers at No. 4 Green Bay Packers

Remember last year’s divisional playoff game where the 49ers won, 45-31, and then in Week 1 the 49ers won again, 34-28. The Packers have to feel that with both
Aaron Rodgers

and
Randall Cobb

back, the time is now for them to make a run. This is a tough game to predict but I expect a number of lead changes with a last-minute drive by the Packers to win it.

Prediction: Packers 28, 49ers 27

FanDuel

This was my first year playing in a daily game and I really enjoyed this format and look forward to playing throughout the playoffs. I also enjoy the thrill of having a chance to win the big prize. Each week I felt that I could tweak a lineup or find that one key matchup that would put me over the top.

This week I’m going heavy on
Jordy Nelson

,
DeSean Jackson

and T.Y. Hilton.
Jamaal Charles

has a really high price tag so you will have to go really cheap at another position.
Alex Smith

is the cheapest quarterback this week.

The top lineup in Week 17 could have score 238.64 for a budget of $59,500.
