Daily Box Score Review – May 6, 2011

Astros’ closer
Brandon Lyon was placed on the 15-day DL with a partially torn rotator cuff.  With that news, Astros manager
Brad Mills named
Mark Melancon the closer.  Melancon is available in over 80% of Yahoo! leagues.

Dodgers’ closer
Jonathan Broxton has been shut down with pain in his throwing elbow.  An MRI on Broxton’s elbow revealed no structural damage.
Vincente Padilla is the most likely replacement at this time. With
Hong-Chih Kuo next in line.

On Tuesday, the Phillies’
Vance Worley improved his record to 2-0 by going 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.  His ERA now stands at 0.75 through 12.0 innings.  Worley should be squarely on your radar if you’re in need of pitching.

Royals first baseman
Kila Ka’aihue lasted only 82 at-bats while hitting .195 with two home runs and six RBI. Ka’aihue was sent down on Thursday as the Royals promoted uber-prospect
Eric Hosmer.  Hosmer was hitting .438 with three home runs, 15 RBI and three stolen bases in 98 at-bats.  Hosmer is a must pick-up in all formats.

Reds starting pitcher
Homer Bailey was impressive in his season debut going 6.0 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out seven.  Bailey dominated while rehabbing in the minors sporting a 0.54 ERA in 16.2 innings while striking out 14.  Bailey is available in almost 90% of Yahoo! leagues.

The Astros
Jason Bourgeois is on fire and needs to be owned.  He stole two more bases on Thursday brining his season total to 11.  He is tied for the league lead with teammate
Michael Bourn and
Jose Reyes.  Bourn and Reyes have stolen their 11 bags in 111 and 134 at-bats, respectively, while Bourgeois has swiped his 11 bags in only 46 at-bats.  Apparently, those who play in Yahoo! leagues don’t need steals or a .391 batting average as Bourgeois is only owned in 6% of leagues.

Despite taking the loss in Tuesday’s game,
Eduardo Sanchez got the call from Cards’ skipper Tony LaRussa on Thursday and picked up his third save in as many opportunities.  Sanchez is still available in over 80% of Yahoo! leagues.
