DFS GEMS: Week 17

Congratulations to all those who won fantasy championships last week! To those still playing for the title, vote for change. Week 17 is not to be trusted! Seriously, how ridiculous is it to make it this far on the backs of your stud players only to have them sit out the final game because their team has nothing to gain? We don’t have to worry about that in daily fantasy sports (DFS) but we do need to be mindful of the situations having adverse effects on the Week 17 landscape. This week, we’ll be steering in and out of the highly sought after games that project a high point total as we attempt to sprinkle in some guys who will hopefully have lower ownership.

Lamar Jackson QB, Baltimore (DraftKings $5,600)

Jackson has been pretty solid in relief of Joe Flacco this season, posting at least 16 points in every contest since he took the job in Week 11. His passing leaves much to be desired but he is improving in that department and hasn’t thrown an interception in four weeks. The Cleveland matchup doesn’t look particularly enticing on paper for opposing quarterbacks but Cleveland ranks Bottom 12 in average fantasy points allowed to running backs, wide receivers and tight ends this season. With all the skill positions drawing nice matchups and Jackson’s adding rushing ability, this looks like a solid spot to play Jackson at home as Baltimore looks to clinch the NFC North.

Josh Allen QB, Buffalo (DraftKings $6,000)

Allen has been a hot name in fantasy circles of late and for good reason. The rookie signal caller is averaging 17 points per game on the season, including 24-point outings in three of his last five contests. This week’s opponent, Miami, has been solid against enemy quarterbacks overall on the season but has been leaky when testing by a legitimate threat at the position. Based on the 33.7 points Allen hung on Miami in Week 13, I’d say he’s legit against this defense. Buffalo has nothing to lose and nothing to gain so expect it to turn the offense loose (as loose as Buffalo can) as it looks to close out 2018 with a win.

Aaron Rodgers QB, Green Bay (DraftKings $6,300)

Rodgers started last week with nothing to gain out of pure leadership. That is the kind of guy you want playing for you, fantasy or not! He took that character opportunity and turned it into a ridiculous 45.9 fantasy points as Green Bay snuck past the New York Jets. Yeah, its gotten that bad in Green Bay these days. This week Green Bay hosts Detroit and its 12th-most generous pass defense in what should be a nice cap to Rodgers’ lackluster 2018. He blasted Detroit for 33.7 points in Week 5 and he’s coming off his best fantasy game of the season by far, giving us ample room for optimism in Week 17.

Jameis Winston QB, Tampa Bay (DraftKings $6,100)

In games against opponents not from Baltimore, Winston has scored 20-plus points in three of his last five contests. Last week he put 19.8 on Dallas, which in my book is close enough to call it four out of five. Atlanta is not Dallas and Atlanta is certainly not Baltimore (defensively), so it’s somewhat safe to expect another 20-plus point outing from Winston in Week 17. Neither team has much to play for aside from pride but Winston as an individual has one last chance to put some good numbers up as he tries to keep Tampa Bay from looking elsewhere in 2019. A date at home against Atlanta and its fourth-friendliest defense for enemy quarterbacks is just what the doctor ordered! He beat Atlanta for 35.7 points in Week 6 and while a lot has happened since then, it gives us a hopeful ceiling while his recent play gives us a safe floor.
