Dgack Whale Shark Interview

Congrats dgack on becoming another one of our Whale Sharks, 1000 messages on the Msg Boards!!
Thank you very much, I’m not sure whether I should be proud of having 1,000 different things to say about fantasy football this year, but as long as you don’t tell my wife, let’s just say it’s an honor.

So, tell us a bit about yourself. Are you really a computer game producer. Very cool.
I really am! About four years ago, I was fortunate enough to get a job with a computer game company called FIRAXIS which is located right across the street from an office I was doing some consulting work for. We do PC strategy games — our most recent title was Sid Meier’s Civilization III. I started at FIRAXIS as the webmaster, and now I’m a producer, which basically means I schedule and track our games from concept to completion, among other things. I love games, so to get to help bring new game ideas to life is like a dream come true for me.

What a COOL job! Ok, so how long have you been participating in Fantasy Football?
I first got into Fantasy Football back in 1995, during college. The guys were really into it, we had a lot of fun, and I was hooked.

And how many leagues are you involved in?
I’m in three. One here at work, which I’m currently 7-2 and in sole possession of first place. A second one I started midseason with some friends, and although I’m #3 in total scoring, I’m 1-4. The last one is a test run of next year’s “Uberleague” with some of the guys from the forums here.

And the Team Name(s). Any meaning behind them?
My work league team is called Sombreros Ultimos. I have a sombrero hanging on my wall at work that was given to me by some of my wife’s family from Texas when we got married. When we play multiplayer shooters at work, I was always Sombrero Del Muerte (Hat of Death), and the nickname just kinda stuck.

My Uberleague team name is “We Hate Me”, a little tribute to Rod Smart, (a.k.a. “He Hate Me”) because I just think he’s hilarious.

So what do you think your best and worst pick of the year was?
Best pick has been Ahman Green, no question. I own him in all three of my leagues and he’s been Mr. Dependable. Worst pick was probably Curtis Conway. Talk about a dropoff.

How about some NFL questions now. I’m assuming if your from Baltimore your a Ravens fan. Right?
Actually, I was born and raised northwest of Baltimore in a place called Frederick, which is and always has been Skins Country. I’m a diehard Skins fan.

And your favorite NFL Player?
Currently I would probably say Peyton Manning, he is just amazing to watch and he seems to finally be making the leap from a really good QB to one of the future all-time greats.

If we’re talking all-time NFL favorite players, Art Monk and Barry Sanders, no question. Art Monk is in my opinion the prime example of how an NFL player should carry himself, on and off the field. Barry was just the most amazing runner I think any of us will see for a long, long time.

How about a Super Bowl prediction from you.
I made a bold prediction on the board after week 2. It was the Colts and the Vikings, with the Colts taking it in a close one. It seemed like a pretty unlikely prediction then but I’m liking the chances of it happening now.

Great. Let’s talk about FantasySharks.com a bit. How did you come to find us?
Last year I played in a money league, the first time I’d done that since my first league in ’95, so I wanted to get some research on sleepers, and who was hot, who wasn’t, and so on. Did a google search, and after looking at about 10 really bad fantasy sites, stumbled onto FantasySharks.com, and I’ve never needed to go anywhere else since!

How about your favorite FantasySharks feature or article?
The draft cheatsheet is always a lifesaver, and I really like the centerfolds. Wait, that’s a different magazine. Umm, yeah, the articles.. that’s the ticket…

Ok. On to the message boards. Have you been getting good advice from the members on the msg boards? Has it helped you this year?
The great thing about the boards is you get a variety of different opinions from guys who are coming at it from different philosophies. It’s always good to hash out your ideas with others before putting them into action.

Any particular poster that you respect the most?
Without sounding like a total plug for the Uberleague, I have to say it was most of my fellow Ubers who got me hooked on posting anyway. Matt, Hemol, Hard 10, Dynasty, Sock, Agenda, Cleffed, Donk, Paddler, Doc (he’ll always be PrimeMover to me), and of course the Stag…

Great. Last question. Still going to be with us at 2000 posts?
I think that’s a pretty safe bet. Not as safe as Priest Holmes against the Falcons, but still pretty safe.

Thanks again for being such an active poster on the message boards! And congratulations on becoming a Whale Shark!!
Thanks guys. You guys run a great site, and I’m glad I can participate. Keep up the good work and here’s to many more Whale Sharks in your future..
