The Diary of a Fantasy Virgin: 2015 NFL Regular Season Postmortem

Two articles for the Virginator this week my friends. The first is the outcome of the NFL season. The NFL season came and went just like the holidays. The fleeting moments of life are played out in the Sports Opera known as the NFL. This postmortem takes into account those moments and predictions and questions to be had before the season started. I did not necessarily nail it, but the questions I asked this year appear to be apropos like they should be. So without further adieu I give you the answers to those burning questions from 9/7/2015. For all of you that have not been paying attention, I asked these questions…

2015 – Riddle Time – Answer Time

Here are the answers to those questions I had before the season began. The answers make you realize the questions were very provocative and noteworthy.

  • Is the addition of Rex Ryan worth more than 9 wins for the Buffalo Bills?

No. The Buffalo Bills had a record of 8-8. One less win than the year before when they were 9-7. Rex Ryan continues to write checks with his mouth that his team cannot cash. For everyone not paying attention Rex declared at his opening press conference as the Bills head coach in reference to the 15-year playoff drought for Buffalo that “We’re going to be playing games in January.” Whoopsie!

No. Rob Gronkowski was 12th in the league in receiving yards with 1,176 yards in 15 games played. Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons led the league with 1,834 receiving yards.

  • Will “Deflategate” affect QB Tom Brady’s 2015 performance?

No. In 2014, Tom Brady was 5th in the NFL with a passer rating of 97.4 He was 10th in the NFL in passing yards with 4,109. He was 5th in the league in TDs with 33. In 2015? He was better.  He was 4th in passer rating with 102.2; 3rd in the league with 4,770 passing yards; and 1st in the league in TDs with 36.

  • Will “Deflategate” affect the New England Patriots team?

No. After starting out the season 10-0, the Patriots shuffled their way to a tie for the best record in the AFC at 12-4.

  • Will “Deflategate” affect the NFL Commissioner Mr. Goodell?

To Be Determined. The Commissioner has rarely spoken out as he did last year. He was very quiet in season 2015 as compared to 2014. Coincidence?

  • Will RG III get dropped?

No. But in all manners of reality other than his paycheck he was. Why? RGIII had zero games played in 2015 with zero attempts and zero yards. It has been a long journey from his Pro Bowl selection in 2012.

No. Peyton Manning played 9 games before succumbing to injury to his foot and ribs and being replaced by backup Brock Osweiler.

  • Will the departure of Rex Ryan mean more than 4 wins for the NY Jets?

Yes. The New York Jets won 10 games in 2015.

  • Will the Philadelphia Eagles break through with their offense?

No. The Eagles were inconsistent winners and finished the season with a record of 7-9 even though they had their chances. Chip Kelly, the 1st-year GM and Chip Kelly the 3rd-year coach were fired on December 29th .

All the questions were answered and some of them just happened to be right where you wanted the NFL Opera to be.  Just a bit of chaos and hot mess followed by a tournament for Super Bowl 50 a.k.a.  Super Bowl L.
