DIARY OF A FANTASY VIRGIN: Preseason II

Hello.  As I begin this week’s article,  we must please pause to take a moment to acknowledge the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.  Everyone affected by Harvey are in our thoughts and prayers.

School has arrived to the children of New England.  There is this weird drama being played out by the youth this day.  There were always judgments based upon the clothing you adorned of course.  But now there is a backpack craze.  I have been told now  you are either “in” or “out” based upon your backpack.  It is always something every year.  Now onto the Summer.

The Summer Of Mayweather vs McGregor

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor garnered attention. I would dare state lots and lots of attention.  And the more that the “boxing crowd” laughed at the “MMA crowd” the more everyone bought into the fight.

The pre-fight press conferences were filled with outrageous speeches and outlandish words that were beeped and beeped and beeped some more.  This caterwauling descended into a primal force of testosterone infused bating on both sides.  But they knew what they were doing.

For the fight Floyd Mayweather won by TKO.  This is a victory for the “boxing crowd”.  But it took 10 rounds and Conor McGregor’s first fight against a professional boxer with the record of 49-0 was fantastic.  This is a victory for the “MMA crowd”.

In the end both fighters brought home an excess of 100 million dollars.  Estimates from the fight alone were 100 million Mayweather and 30 million McGregor.  Not a bad days work mind you.  But it does not end there.  It ends with Mayweather getting a portion of the 700 million pay-per-view revenues.  That portion to be split up 70% Mayweather and 30 % McGregor.

The fight seems to be set up as a re-match.  I guess it will only happen if one or both of the fighters go broke.

For your draft, it is go broke or go home.  We need to begin in the beginning.

In The Beginning …

The draft is coming within a week from now for my league and the time has come to prepare.  The draft is scheduled for September 4th  at 7:00 PM.  It is quite simple really.  Step 1: load your scoring system into FantasySharks.com.  The way you get ready for the draft is to oversee the offensive dominion of the NFL and go for maximum points which is of course the goal of every other team in the draft.

Begin by sending a simple note to the person running your league.  Say something like this…”The Fantasy Sharks Virgin has asked me to ask you what the scoring system is in our league.  Please point me to the place where the scoring system is or you will be considered a low-rent Fantasy Football Commissioner.  Thanks.”  After you register for this site (if you haven’t already), take that information and follow these steps.

Go to My Fantasy Sharks -> Customize Fantasy Sharks To Your Leagues -> My Scoring Systems.  Next enter in all the information associated with the scoring system in your league.  Now click on  Projections -> Season Projections, click on Quarterback and voila, based upon last year’s stats and your league’s scoring system, the ranking of all Quarterbacks appear on your screen.  Now if you would like, continue through all the positions and take that information to your melon.  Buyer beware though because this is last year’s results and just like the stock market, past results do not a future make.  Next, print out the Printable Custom Cheat Sheet.  Now, and this is the brilliant part about fantasysharks.com, see what the heck the people who have been doing this for awhile do when they have to pick.  That means going to the 2017 All Positions Predictions page.  These three references will prepare you for your selections on draft day.

The information is convenient, quick, and current.  It is information all to yourself and when you combine the All Positions Predictions page with your custom Scoring System, you are ahead of most.  You have just navigated the toughest road for now you have all the information.  And when you have information, you have power.  Now comes the execution part.

The Execution

Be weary, fellow virgins, veterans, and others who don’t want to fit in to either category.  The draft is a mistress of folly.  Filled with good intentions, the results can leave you laughing in the streets or groaning in the alleyways of Shangri La.  Scour the team’s websites of the top 30 players in each RB/WR/QB position.  That means 90 players and make sure they are not injured.  I suggest you pick the best TE and Defensive team after you have two or three Wide Receivers and a top Running Back.  Next map out a strategy of picks based upon points/player analysis/printable custom cheat sheet or some combination thereof.  Take a deep break and … GO!

The Aftermath

The aftermath is your team.  Enter this team in to the following place on this website.  Go to My Fantasy Sharks –> Customize Fantasy Sharks To Your Leagues My Players and enter your players in.   For those returning to this area from last year, you can get a proper look at your team from last year and say goodbye.   Now you can take advantage of my next article.  My next article will go in to the steps needed to select the team you will play that week.  Go off and be merry, because projection tools are evil and reality is a long walk off a short board.  Your team will change so much due to injury, craziness, trades, and dumb luck that your last week may not resemble this moment in time.  But you have a friend to shepherd you through the valley of “playas”.  All of us are alone.  We might as well reach out and get through it together.  My diary entry is about the NFL state of mind.

Dear Diary

The NFL is ready and not ready for the new season.  They are ready as teams go but they are handling a situation that comes with the 400 lb gorilla in the room.  If you are not growing, you are dying.  Or if you are not number one as much as last year or the year before you are no longer relevant.

When you have a product that gets a 45.3 share and an estimated 172,000,000 viewers out of a population of somewhere north of 330,000,000 you are doing just fine.  Why does everyone run to the edge of the paper when presented with statistics like that?  This means there are not enough superlatives to describe this unusual product.  Something that bring more than ½ of the country together for better or for worse leaves me with no concerns there.

As far as I am concerned next up for me is the Fantasy Football draft for my league.  So prepare using Fantasy Sharks as your guide and make it through draft day.  Now I spend this time wondering what my team will look like.

That is next week’s article.
