Whether your draft picks exceed expectations or not, teams can often achieve moderate success if their players can stay healthy. Losing players for lengthy periods of time can drop a team in the ranks depending on the productivity of the sidelined player and quality of replacement.
During the week of April 16, team Fantasy Sharks suffered several difficult injuries. These injuries were a key reason for the team falling from first to sixth. In addition to injuries, several starters, including Joe Blanton, Hiroki Kuroda and Adam Wainwright were rocked by opposing bats. Roy Halladay, Colby Lewis and Lance Lynn continue their consistency and have been an excellent source of wins and strikeouts. Check out my three sidelined players and prognoses.
Lance Berkman – Before last week, Berkman had taken a few days off as a precaution for his injured calf muscle. In his second game returning from injury, Berkman re-aggravated his wounded calf. This injury left a hole in my lineup for the remainder of the week, which limited production at my first base position. The veteran slugger is expected to miss at least two weeks, but anticipate the St. Louis Cardinals to be very cautious and will not rush Berkman back into the lineup until he is fully healed. Matt Carpenter has been a solid fill-in worthy of a waiver add in deeper leagues.
Chris Young – One of the hottest fantasy surprises thus far has been Arizona’s Young. After tweaking his batting stance during spring training, Young has been on a terror this April, batting .410 with five home runs and 13 runs batted in. The Diamondbacks outfielder attempted a sensational diving catch, but ended up suffering a shoulder contusion. This is a tough hit for many fantasy teams, especially in deep leagues. Young should be sidelined around three weeks, but a timetable is yet to be officially announced. Pick up Gerardo Parra as he has been useful in many fantasy leagues and will receiving the bulk of starts until Young returns.
Daniel Hudson – Young is not the only Arizona Diamondback with a shoulder injury. Right-hander Dan Hudson suffered a shoulder impingement and was also placed on the Disabled List. His absence is not expected to last long, but will hurt owners counting on his strikeout and win production, especially in deeper leagues with limited pitching options.
Good luck this week, and hope your team stays healthy!
