Home / Commentary / DYNASTY STOCK MARKET: Defense – Vol. 2

In a dynasty league, the most valuable asset is the team owner’s ability to know when to buy players who are on the cusp of breaking out and knowing when to cut loose a player who is about to go into decline. Much like the real world stock market, making the wrong decision sometimes can lead to cataclysmic consequences. If you are in a league where you can unload or load up on some of these players, do so!

BUY LOW: Barry Church, Jacksonville Jaguars

Barry Church has the unique opportunity of being a very good player landing in a very good position. After Jonathan Cyprien fled Jacksonville to the division rival Titans, he left a huge whole in the secondary for someone to fill. Enter Barry Church who had an 80+ Tackle season after missing a handful of games in a depleted secondary that could get no help. I see Church bumping those numbers up drastically having to play Mariota and Luck twice a year.

SELL HIGH: Calvin Pryor, New York Jets

This one saddens me as I really like Pryor, I even drafted him in my rookie draft when he came into the NFL, but alas the Jets not picking up his option and the drafting of Jamal Adams seems to put the nail in the coffin for Pryor.  This will probably be his last season in New York. While he does have some value, I know I myself am going to try to trade him for a low draft pick to take a flier on a new defensive player this year.

BUY LOW: DeForest Buckner, San Francisco 49’ers

I am really stoked for the 49ers Team Defense this year. After adding Thomas and Foster, I know this defense is going to be monstrous. Buckner is in no trouble of losing his starting job and with adding more high caliber talent to the line, there isn’t going to be any weak spots for opposing teams to take advantage of. I am certain that Buckner is going to flirt with DL1 numbers but finish as a solid DL2 for the year.

SELL HIGH: J.J. Watt, Houston Texans

I have to put this one in because I need to make everyone aware of the situation we here in Houston have to face. Watt is coming back from multiple surgeries and has been regarded as the top IDP or top DL in leagues for the past 2-3 years. This just cannot stand. Khalil Mack and Alec Ogletree both have a giant chance to outscore him hands down and Khalil Mack is being classified as a DE as of now. While I am sure that Watt can still produce good numbers for you, I implore everyone to not pay the king’s ransom that he has been going for in the past and use your resources more wisely.

BUY LOW: Jamie Collins, Cleveland Browns

Most people didn’t like the Collins trade to Cleveland last year but I for one loved it. Here in Cleveland, you know he is guaranteed to start and the defense is always going to have to work hard because they’re always going to be behind. Collins is going to have a full year as a Brown along with having Myles Garrett help him on the line, I am drafting Collins as an LB1 without hesitation.

SELL HIGH: Brian Cushing, Houston Texans

I swear I am not trying to hate on Houston but this is the end of the line for Cushing. Last year, he was the 3rd best of the Texans Linebacker crew and that’s not even including Clowney who is so versatile that he can play any position on the line. Zack Cunningham is going to be his replacement, I don’t care what you hear. Get out while you can and trade Cushing for some draft picks or a fresher rookie.
