DFS GEMS: Week 1

Tight Ends

TE George Kittle, San Francisco (DraftKings $6,600; FanDuel $7,300)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
SF 49 50.5 25.25 24 23 25 7
TB -2.5 Pick 25.25 30 28 27 24

Who’s the WR1 in San Francisco? Dante Pettis? Marquise Goodwin? Nah, its George Kittle! Tampa Bay’s struggles on the defensive side of the ball are well documented and rather than try to figure out which wideout you want to trot out there, just spend up and use Kittle. His 135 targets last season accounted for a 26.4 percent target market share on his entire team! Yes, there were injuries last year but that kind of volume has to mean something in this offensive scheme! Vegas expects fireworks in this game and if we’re already starting weapons from Tampa Bay, it would be wise to play the opponent’s stack. Kittle looks like a lock this week.

TE Hunter Henry, Los Angeles Chargers (DraftKings $3,900; FanDuel $6,100)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
IND 48 44.5 19 11 15 1 30
LAC -3.5 -6.5 25.5 6 24 5 14

If you can’t quite fit Kittle into your lineup, Henry looks to be a strong play for considerably less. As you can see from the chart, Indianapolis was uber generous to opposing tight ends in 2018, ranking right at the bottom of the barrel. Coming off a lost season, Henry hopefully won’t need long to shake the rust off and get going in what projects to be a nice game for him given Los Angeles’ 25-plus implied total combined with this cake defense. I expect high ownership due to his price but I also expect many to gravitate towards Kittle and Travis Kelce this week. Either way, he’s worth a shot.

TE Delanie Walker, Tennessee (DraftKings $3,500; FanDuel $5,400)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
TEN 45 45.5 20 7 3 21 6
CLE -5 -5.5 25.5 21 22 19 28

This is a bit of a sneaky play as Tennessee isn’t projected to score many points in this contest and the over/under is nice and low so it won’t exactly draw in the fish either. The matchup on the other hand, looks very nice. Cleveland allowed the fifth-most points per game to enemy tight ends a season ago and Tennessee isn’t exactly flush with receiving weapons. In fact, one could easily argue that Walker is the No. 2 option in that passing game behind Corey Davis. This is my cheap play at tight end for the week. Spend up elsewhere!

TE – Evan Engram, New York Giants (DraftKings $4,800; FanDuel $6,400)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
NYG 46.5 45 19 18 26 8 22
DAL -7.5 -7 25.5 10 11 7 23

In two meetings against Dallas in 2018, Engram totaled 12 receptions on 15 targets, racking up 148 yards and two touchdowns (one in each contest) With Odell Beckham Jr. having been shipped off to Cleveland and Golden Tate suspended, expect Engram to get his fair share of targets. While the defense will likely key on him a bit, I’m not sure it will matter given its struggles against the tight end a season ago. He’s not expensive, but he’s not cheap either so maybe his price and low implied team total will keep ownership low. Given his track record against Dallas, he’ll certainly be in several of my lineups.

D/ST

All of these plays are spots where I feel like the defense will have ample opportunity to rack up sacks and interceptions, which is where fantasy defenses make their hay. Rather than say that four times, just know that, along with price, are the primary things I’m looking for with my defense/special teams plays each week.

D/ST Kansas City Chiefs (-4) (DraftKings $2,800; FanDuel $3,900)

D/ST Los Angeles Chargers (-6.5) (DraftKings $3,000; FanDuel $4,000)

D/ST Cleveland Browns (-5.5) (DraftKings $3,400; FanDuel $4,300)

D/ST Seattle Seahawks (-9.5) (DraftKings $3,100; FanDuel $4,500)
