DFS GEMS: Week 12

Well, I ran into the buzz-saw last week but the good thing about daily fantasy sports (DFS) is you can look back one week at a time and see where you made errors and learn from it. That and the fact that we get to rack it all up brand new each week!

We’re going to switch things up a little since the high price quarterback path led me to ruin in so many spots last week. This week we’re diving into some cheap quarterback stacks. I’m talking like 10k or less total in some cases – yeah, that cheap. Assigning your budget appropriately is critical so we’ll be looking for unique opportunities that could exceed expectations. Caution, risk lies ahead. Where we plug in these uber-cheap stacks we’ll be pairing those with massively expensive stud running backs and wideouts, many of which did not make this particular 20-player list.

On to Week 12.

As a reminder the rankings below indicate the corresponding team’s ranking in average DraftKings points allowed per game (YTD). The higher the number, the better the matchup.  All info that applies to the recommended player will be displayed in bold.

I play on DraftKings exclusively so most of my takes will be slanted towards their scoring and pricing. The weekly Millionaire Maker contest is also focused on the Sunday daytime slate. For takes and advice regarding primetime and London games hit me on Twitter @DavidO_DFS

Quarterbacks

QB Jeff Driskel, Detroit (DraftKings $5,500, FanDuel $7,300)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
det -1.5 -3.5 22.5 28 32 23 23
was 41 41.5 19 18 27 16 20

As an exhausted Detroit fan, I absolutely love Driskel this week at Washington. All of the Detroit’s skill positions have favorable matchups against this soft defense and Driskel is playing well coming off an exciting loss to Dallas last week where he put 27.5 DraftKings points on the board. With Matthew Stafford out for the foreseeable future it is Driskel’s team and his time to audition for any potential starting gigs down the road. This juicy matchup on the road looks like a nice spot to put some good stuff on film. A five times fantasy score seems well within range here.

QB Nick Foles, Jacksonville (DraftKings $5,400, FanDuel $7,200)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
jax 41 41 19 16 21 12 11
ten -2.5 -3 22 17 15 18 22

It’s been a wild ride at the quarterback position for Jacksonville this year but it appears the pendulum has finally rested on Foles, for now. He’ll have a nice chance this week to showcase his skills on the road at Tennessee. The matchup isn’t great in the year-to-date chart above but Tennessee has given up the seventh-most DK points per game to opposing passers over its last four contests, making this is very favorable spot to play this low-priced option. We’re looking for about 25 points from this play and Foles missed a 22-point effort by 4 yards a week ago.

QB Sam Darnold, New York Jets (DraftKings $5,800, FanDuel $7,400)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
oak -3 -3 24.75 26 18 22 28
nyj 47 46.5 21.75 23 13 31 5

I’m trying to spend nothing at quarterback this week if you couldn’t tell. I like Darnold’s matchup for both himself and literally all of his weapons. With his defense having struggles of its own, this could turn into a B-team shootout of sorts and Darnold has surpassed 21 points in two straight games. All the math is right and Darnold’s negative public opinion should keep his ownership moderate even if people do find themselves drawn to this game due to the matchups.

QB Baker Mayfield, Cleveland (DraftKings $5,900, FanDuel $7,500)

Team O/U (open) O/U (current) Implied Team Total vs. QB vs. RB vs. WR vs. TE
mia 45 44.5 17 27 25 19 18
cle -9 -10.5 27.5 20 17 10 14

This feels expensive for Mayfield. I haven’t checked but I’m sure this is his highest price in a while. It’s still a bit of a value with three straight 17-plus point outings and a favorable Week 12 tilt with Miami. Massive home favorites with a soft matchup for quarterbacks, receivers and running backs make Mayfield a very intriguing option for the price. Many of us, myself included, had high hopes for this Cleveland offense and it may be coming together as Miami bring its “defense” to town.

Honorable Mentions

Matt Ryan, Atlanta $6,700 DK, $7,900 FD

Dwayne Haskins, Washington $4,900 DK, $6,700 FD

Ryan should have sky-high ownership and for good reason with his matchup against Tampa Bay so I think everyone knows about him but Haskins could be interesting at his price point. In all honesty, I won’t try to stack him which I know is guaranteed prize pool blasphemy but with Darius Slay expected to shadow Terry McLaurin, with whom would you feel good about stacking him? He’s got a shot at 20 DK points in his matchup against Detroit and could be a surprisingly useful fantasy asset this week despite his real-life football growing pains.

DFS GEMS: Week 17

Having posted a 20.9 point effort against these Titans not but 2 weeks ago, Hopkins feels like a safe place to invest in week 17. Kenny Stills and Will Fuller (glass Joe) are both banged up leaving Hopkins alone to soak up more targets than usual in this favorable spot.

WR Michael Thomas and QB Drew Brees NO

DFS GEMS: Week 16

Brees is ballin’ out at the moment and despite the massive price tag, I’ll have a hard time keeping him out of my lineups this week. It’s a great matchup for the entire offense so despite the middling ranking against quarterbacks.
