Las Vegas Raiders of Oakland

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports the possibility of the Raiders moving to Las Vegas is "very real," and that owner Mark Davis has been discussing the possibility with casino magnate Sheldon Adelson for "two years."
Concurrently, longtime Raiders reporter Bill Williamson reports Las Vegas is "confident" about attracting a team to town. Almost assuredly, lots of this is hot air, but it's something to be taken seriously since the Raiders' Oakland situation is beyond tenuous at this point. The major roadblock is the NFL's extreme aversion toward appearing to support gambling. Of all the league's 32 owners, Davis is probably near the bottom when it comes to the kind of clout that would be needed to persuade for such a move.

probably just a pipe dream / leverage against the city of Oakland, much like Davis' dalliance with San Antonio. Still worth monitoring.

I'd be shocked.

Can that market support a NFL team?

I think the growth rate has kind of slowed recently but Vegas was booming for a while.

All they have to do is market the suites as a bachelor party package. They'll sell out every Sunday.

Vegas makes a great maybe preferred destination if you're planning out the season and doing a road trip following your home team.

Its metro area (vs city proper) which I think is a more useful measuring stick is around the 14th largest in the US - roughly the same as Seattle.

There is plenty of population - size wise to support an NFL team. No clue whether the demographics (per capita income, corporate participation etc.) would.

I think it has a reputation as an "event" town and with only 8 home regular season games, an NFL game might qualify

Apples - oranges but pretty sure the NASCAR race at LV Motor Speedway draws close to 150,000 for the event.

I think of Vegas as being very touristy and not so much of a place to live. I never had to go far outside the strip to hit the slums. Really doubt there would be enough of an affluent fan base to fund the team over a long period.

Problem would be, I imagine, that the road teams fans would come out in droves, and the home team wouldn't have the usual HFA.

But I'm all for it.

IMO, not for a few years at least and they won't be the 1st major sport there. Also, you're insane if you think the NFL is going to allow Mark Davis to be the owner of the team that goes to Vegas. This is all about leverage for a new stadium deal.

if detroit can pack out ford field every sunday without fail despite the city's and team's failings, i doubt vegas would have any problem filling a stadium on the regular.

You can't have a stick to threaten the other cities with if you put a team in Vegas AND LA. They'll make more money leaving Vegas open and threatening to move there to get new stadiums. No one's going to buy "We'll move to St. Louis!" as having much menace. Joins Atlanta as the only city to ever lose TWO professional sports teams. Congrats!

Excellent point...the Cowboy/Texans posturing has reduced San Antonio as an option

Not going to happen in Vegas or San Antonio. The league simply won't allow it. I think you will see the Raiders in San Diego in the near future. Maybe in 2-3 years.

Not if the chargers stay put.

Yeah....you never know, it might be Inglewood if they stay.
