He's had some pretty terrible defenses.

And he's about to inherit another

Right, it's not a team game, except for when it fits the narrative of Stafford isn't completely mediocre.

Or...

I don't care how badly he played for 3 quarters because he played well in the 4th quarter a few times.

We get it.

You're a Stafford apologist.

if that's what makes you feel like you're right, run with it. i could really care less.

Is he though?

He had by far his most attempts in 2012 with 727 (10% higher than his next highest year, 12% above avg per 16 games) and he had a 20:17 TD:INT ratio. A 4-12 record, and actually (on paper) had decent protection with only 29 sacks (averages 37.3 per 16 games for his career). Incidentally, his 2018 yards per attempt were the same as 2012, he just didn't have 727 attempts to pad his stats. 2012 was also his worst full-season TD and INT rate of his career. (Only lower was his 10-game rookie season, which was...rough)

2017 and 2018 are his lowest attempt #s for a full season of his career, and they're his 2nd and 3rd best INT rates of his career. 2017 was also his best yard/attempt of his career.

His best INT rate was 2016, which was his 4th lowest attempts/season in his career (full season). His 2nd and 3rd best TD rates came in seasons he had less than 600 attempts (career average 651.3/`16 games). His best four seasons in completion % were all under 600 attempts. 3 of his top 4 season in QB rating were less than 600 attempts.

Basically Stafford had a really good (outlier) season in 2011 where he threw for over 5000 yards and 41 TDs and led a team that had always lost to a surprise 10-6 season in his first full season as a starter, and he's been coasting on that ever since. His TD rate that season was 41% above his career average, which is an insane outlier. (INT rate was right at career avg, FWIW.) It's also his only season over 600 attempts where he had higher than career-average completion percentage. His best statistical seasons, though, at least per-attempt (TD, INT, QB Rating, Completion %, Y/A, etc) are when he's been asked to do the least.

Well, his rushing yards were down in 2018. So there's that.

So you are saying that completion rates look better when QBs make less throws and ints as part of a conservative low-risk offense? Mind-blowing.

I don't feel like I'm right, I know that I'm right.

I'm sure it sucks to be a Lions fan, but it sucks even more to be a Lions fan who believes Stafford isn't part of the problem that team has had.

tl;dr:

"not really" --me

"DUH EVERY QB IS BETTER WHEN THEY'RE JUST A GAME MANAGER" --you again

re: von's arguement....

stafford is best in two situations:

1) when he has time in the pocket (like every other quarteback ever).

2) when he's tasked with putting together a game winning drive with little time left on the clock. his situational awareness and ability to keep his cool is better than most QBs in the league.

stafford is at his worst when the game is getting out of hand and he feels the need to manufacture yards and points. that's when he forces things way too much....a couple times to the point of getting benched.

I may be looking through rose colored glasses here.. D.B. may help him some w/that. I'm likely more optimistic than most.

Situational football will be the talking points this year IMO.. not overall stats. Lions have some bright spots to work with on O.

i know better than to look at anything re: the loins optimistically. that said, i don't look at the DB hire pessimistically. did it move the needle? nope. matt millen moved the needle. rod marinelli moved the needle. i want wins. show me. if you can't show me on sunday, it's all white noise.

re: bright spots on O....yes. they have a young and talented OL. they have a really good piece at WR in golladay and a really good piece at RB in kerryon. martha ford has quinn's, matty patty's, and stafford's contracts all expiring in the same year IIRC. if it needs to blow up....it should be relatively easy to press the big red button. in theory.

a wise man once said potential will get you fired. the loins have had potential forever. the '18 loins were emotionally flat. i haven't seen the team look that aloof ever, i think. hell, the 0-16 year they played their azzes off....they just had a historically chitty team.

but stafford ain't the problem. he might not be the answer, but he damn sure ain't the problem. anyone that actually pays the loins more than a guffaw of amusement and pity should know this.
