I think that’s the thing, usually they reference injury for the player not returning. I would suspect that they have shutdown an injured player that could have come back during the season.
Like when they bench a Qb for not playing well and say he is injured.
Has it really happened no way to really know.

1: That doesn't happen relatively often
2: That's usually a precursor to that player losing their job.
