Grinders and Gambles – Tight End

For many of us football has started again as dynasty leagues open their wires and prepare for their drafts. Over the next few weeks, many leagues will have players cut to free up roster room and league owners replaced as members drop out. Now is the time to go shopping for some bargains to patch holes or snag a few lottery tickets.

Drafts are also starting now, MFL10s have started, and some of these guys can come to you in later rounds for real value.

(All average draft positions are from MyFantasyLeague.com using a 12 man league and PPR unless otherwise noted).

Grinders

Gary Barnidge – Hey, it’s been months since my Annie Wilkes-like obsession with Barnidge has made it to virtual paper, but he should be a very nice grinder. Whomever the QB ends up being will need a safety valve, considering how young the receiving corps is, Barnidge should give you another good season. His recent surgery, the uncertainty as to who will be the signal caller for the Browns, and the fact that he came out of nowhere and was quietly awesome has kept his cost down. He will be a great bargain in Rounds 9-12 depending on league and scoring system.

Antonio Gates – Every year there is a debate about when the wheels will fall off and every year Gates comes back and grinds. Is he the beast that he was? No. Injuries, suspensions, other receivers, and age have reduced his numbers. According to MyFantasyLeague.com’s ADP, he is currently being drafted behind Stephen Gotskowski. I just picked him for .003% of budget in a dynasty start up. Yes, .003%. I get it, he may retire after this year or the wheels could fall off. That makes him a perfect grinder candidate with a great price.

Zach Miller – Miller should have the starting job in Chicago. He is currently showing an MFL ADP behind Arian Foster. There are no bad picks in the late rounds but there are awesome ones. Miller could end up being your steal of the draft.

Gambles

Eric Ebron – Ebron has had his issues. Just keep chanting “The ball is my friend.” His targets have increased and without Megatron there is plenty of ball to go around. Besides his hands, Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, Theo Riddick, and Ameer Abdullah also put him on the Gambles list.

Larry Donnell/Will Tye – Who is going to be the starting tight end for the New York Football Giants? That wasn’t rhetorical. Anyone? Anyone? Let me know when you find out. If there is a winner, they will be a great buy. Just to add some confusion to the mix, Jordan Raanan has reported that Matt LaCosse has looked good this year.

Hunter Henry – This is for the dynasty owners. Gates will be mentoring Henry and long-term he could be a nice grab.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins/Cameron Brate – If ASJ can make it more than 7 games and stop getting in trouble he might be everything fantasy players have been dreaming of. Cameron Brate is putting up a fight and could be the grab.
