Home / Lineup / GRINDERS & GAMBLES: Week 14

“Grinders and Gambles” is duct tape for teams in need of help. This list is for deeper leagues or for those in shallower leagues who are picking up players in free agency after waivers have run.

Grinders are the guys who will get you some points. They may not have an upside but they will grind out 5-15 depending on your scoring.
Gambles can get you a goose egg but also have upside.

Playoffs are upon us and the wires are thin, injuries are stacking up and trying to fix some teams may feel like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Here are some grabs that might be out there to patch holes and carry you through.

Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo

If Taylor is healthy, he will be playing the Indianapolis defense. If you are desperate, he is still available in some leagues and may have even been dropped after his injury.

Blaine Gabbert, Arizona

He is still Blaine Gabbert. You have to know who you are starting. He also plays Tennessee this week if you need to limp into playoffs.

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco

San Francisco won and his stat line was respectable but not exciting. You should see that improve by 5-10 points this week if he keeps his play up. He should give you grinder numbers as his floor.

DeShone Kizer, Cleveland

With Josh Gordon’s return, Kizer has some fantastic pass catchers at his disposal. He is a huge gamble but he could be fun this week and in Week 16.

Joe Flacco, Baltimore

Flacco did well last week but faces Pittsburgh this week which will probably be a rough game. He has Cleveland next week and Indianapolis in Week 16 if you can hold out and deploy him as part of a platoon.

Running Backs

Peyton Barber, Tampa Bay

Doug Martin’s injury gave Barber a chance to shine and shine he did. Barber should continue to have a roll in the running game and is still available in multiple leagues.

Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati

Bernard disappeared behind the Joe Mixon hype this year but Mixon is banged up and Bernard is worth a grab as a points per reception league gamble.

Mike Davis, Seattle

Davis should produce some grinder numbers this week but Jacksonville isn’t a walk in the park for running backs any more than it is for quarterbacks. Temper your expectations.

Andre Ellington, Houston

Ellington is listed as a running back but may line up as a receiver. He is a points per reception league gamble this week against Tennessee and a desperation gamble in standard leagues.
