GRINDERS & GAMBLES: Week 17

“Grinders and Gambles” is duct tape for teams in need of help. This list is for deeper leagues or for those in shallower leagues who are picking up players in free agency after waivers have run.

Grinders are the guys who will get you some points. They may not have an upside but they will grind out 5-15 points depending on your scoring.
Gambles can get you a goose egg but also have tremendous upside.

If you are reading this, take a moment and draft a quick email to your commissioner:

Dear Commish,

Why is our Super Bowl in Week 17 when teams rest their players?

Sincerely,

[Team name or inappropriate joke goes here]

Teams have locked up their playoff spots and are going to be resting players and you need to find replacements.

QUARTERBACK

Joe Flacco, Baltimore

Flacco is grinding away and should give you a solid stat line this week against Cincinnati. He is a steady play to get you some points at a volatile position.

Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo

Buffalo needs the win to have a chance. Miami still exists to crush my hopes and dreams.  The result is a decent gamble for what may as well be Buffalo’s Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City

There is buzz that Kansas City coach Andy Reid will rest his starters. That means Mahomes will take the field against Denver. This is a huge gamble for super deep leagues and two quarterback leagues.

Brett Hundley, Green Bay

He has been … not awesome. Neither has the Detroit defense. Hundley is another deep gamble for a needy team.

T.J. Yates, Houston

This will be a game between two backups adding some film to their resumes. Yates played the Jacksonville and Pittsburgh defenses back-to-back and should bounce back some this week, making him a decent gamble in a deep league.

RUNNING BACK

Kapri Bibbs, Washington

This week he gets the New York Giants, a far better matchup than last week’s game against Denver. He should get some touches. Gamble.

Wayne Gallman, New York Giants

Still sitting on wires if you need a gamble. The Giants are not in a great place right now but he might eke you out a few points.

Matt Breida, San Francisco

It looks like San Francisco has found their quarterback of the future in Jimmy Garoppolo. He is going to keep the defense honest and there is some thought that the team may decide to lighten Carlos Hyde’s workload this week. He should make a good gamble.

Charcandrick West and Akeem Hunt, Kansas City

Kansas City should be resting their starters this week, including Kareem Hunt. Denver is a brutal matchup and things could get a bit ugly, but West and Akeem Hunt are two desperation gambles for the week.

Javorius “Buck” Allen, Baltimore

Allen didn’t put up a great stat line last week but he has a good matchup this week and is worth a gamble.

T.J. Yeldon, Jacksonville

Leonard Fournette should get some rest this week and Yeldon may be just the pick me up pickup (try saying that five times fast) that your team needs. Gamble.
