GRINDERS AND GAMBLES: Week 3

I am back!! I have power, I have cable, I watched football this Sunday (which is significantly better than week 1 which involved me doing a jigsaw puzzle by storm lamp light eating canned tuna).

Grinders and Gambles is waiver wire duct tape for teams needing to go a little deeper on wires.

Grinders are the guys that will get you some points. They may not have an upside but they will grind out 5-15 points depending on your scoring.

Gambles can get you a goose egg but also have tremendous upside.

(D) added Dynasty/Keeper value

Wubby Alert – Potential security blanket for a team or QB.

QUARTERBACK

Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs

I know he is gone already, but it isn’t a GG column without a shout out to Captain Checkdown.  (If he isn’t gone, go grab him)

Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos

So Siemian has been a top 5 QB for two weeks now. He is a gamble, but worth the grab. (D)

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens

I wouldn’t want to lean on him in the next two weeks but he could be a grinder for you during bye week madness.

Jay Cutler, Miami Dolphins

Cutler wasn’t mind blowing in his Dolphin debut but he provided grinder numbers. With his schedule he has crazy upside. He is also still Jay Cutler so there will always be a gamble in playing him. He has the Jets and the Saints coming up.

Josh McCown, New York Jets

Yeah we are digging deep here. The Jets are a flaming dumpster fire. He can be a gamble in a pinch.

Case Keenum and Jacoby Brissett

Reasons to own these quarterbacks:

  1. You play in a crazy deep 2QB league.
  2. See 1. That’s the only one.

RUNNING BACK

Chris Carson, Seattle Seahawks

Don’t chuck whichever share you have of the Seattle backfield you currently have yet but grab Carson, it looks like he may be a great grinder with high upside (D)

Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine, Washington Redskins

Rob Kelley is banged up with a fractured rib. Perine could be a great grinder and get you steady points. Chris Thompson may make a very nice gamble this year. Keep in mind he had 3 carries and 7 targets with 3 receptions, he is potentially boom/bust. He also has a chance to become a wubby for Kirk Cousins who clearly needs a wubby right now. (D)

Jalen Richard, Oakland Raiders

The definition of a gamble.  Marshawn Lynch is the guy but Richard always has a chance to hit out of the park in relief.

New England Running Backs

It is the Patriots, and playing their running backs is like playing Three Card Monte. James White and Mike Gillislee are probably rostered. Grab Rex Burkhead or if you have a deep roster Dion Lewis. Just remember the queen is always up Belichick’s sleeve.

Elijah McGuire, New York Jets

Crazy deep league grab and stash. As the Jets continue to make the rest of the division feel better about themselves he may see an uptick in carries.

Chris Johnson, Arizona Cardinals

If you really need a back he could grind you some points for a few weeks. I wouldn’t think less of you if you did a prop bet on how long he stays healthy.

About Lisa London

I suffer from an undying obsession with fantasy football. Former Lee Evans owner, I am not proud. Admitting you have a problem is the first step, I would get to the second one but I have lineups to set. Follow me on Twitter @leedoglaw
