Grinders and Gambles – Week 3

WHO IS THIS MYSTERY GAMBLE? COME INSIDE TO FIND OUT. This is a weekly collection of pickups for leagues where your bench and/or waiver wire is thin. Played together, “Grinders and Gambles” can help patch holes in a team or be the extra push you need to get those wins.

GRINDERS – The guys who will get you points in a pinch.

QUARTERBACK

Andy Dalton – Dalton has actually looked pretty good this year. He has a fantastic set of receivers including Tyler Eifert and he may be waiting for you on the wire. If you lost Tony Romo or Jay Cutler this week, Dalton will serve as an effective patch.

Alex Smith – Yes, he was terrible last week. That is why he might get dumped over the next few weeks in all but the deepest of leagues. He is going to have his bad games but he still makes a nice patch for a beat up quarterback corps. The Green Bay Packers are tough but Smith should have to throw.

RUNNING BACK

Devonta FreemanTevin Coleman is sidelined with a rib injury. Freeman might have been cut in a shallower league or is sitting on your bench. He should grind for you this week.

Khiry Robinson/C.J. Spiller – The Carolina defense is probably licking its chops waiting for New Orleans after the Saints played so badly against Tampa Bay. These guys might get some work as Drew Brees tries to avoid a very hungry Thomas Davis and company.

Ronnie Hillman – It looks like this will be a shared backfield right now. Hillman should be good for 5-10 points.

WIDE RECEIVER

Stevie Johnson – If he isn’t on a roster he should be and he should be starting for you unless you have great receivers. He has been a top-of-the-line “Grinder.”

Michael Crabtree – Still Oakland, still a young Derek Carr at quarterback but a “revamped” defense has been a turnstile for tight ends and Oakland is going to have to throw. If Joe Haden matches up with Amari Cooper this week, Crabtree should be a grinder with upside.

TIGHT END

Charles Clay – Clay has been relatively quiet this year but he should get you grinder numbers against Miami. Expect 5-15 points.
