Home / Commentary / GRINDERS and GAMBLES: Week 5

Grinders and Gambles is a waiver wire duct tape for teams needing to go a little deeper on the waiver wire.

Grinders are the guys who will get you some points. They may not have an upside but they will grind out 5-15 points depending on your scoring.

Gambles can get you a goose egg but also have tremendous upside.

(D) added Dynasty/Keeper value

Wubby – Potential security blanket for a team or quarterback.

Ryan Fitzpatrick – Hey, slightly less interceptions. He should hit some wires. Would I roll with Fitzpatrick at the helm? Nope. Would he be a nice cheap target if I need a quarterback this week or for Week 8 when byes run? Yeah. BYE WEEK GAMBLE.

Joe Flacco – It isn’t pretty but he is still a GRINDER.

Carson Wentz – (D) Hopefully you grabbed him with the bye. GAMBLE/GRAB.

Case Keenum – You know it’s desperate, but he is winning games. Seriously, he led Los Angeles to a victory over Carson Palmer and Arizona. The statistical odds of that sentence being in that order prior to this game was pretty astronomical. Wheeeeeeeee!

Brian Hoyer – Jay Cutler has never exactly been clutch but that moment when Brian Hoyer is a legitimate threat to your job things are bleak. Cutler may get his job back but Hoyer is there for deep grabs.

Josh Ferguson – He is getting a bit more attention and could make a decent points per reception pick up. Frank Gore is there and he is the guy. Ferguson is a low-end points per reception. (D) GAMBLE.

Kenneth Dixon – Because Baltimore needs a running game. Seriously, I can’t imagine he is out there but if he comes back this week and plays against Washington he could cost a heck of a lot more. Grab him, stash him, and if he isn’t a thing throw him back. But if you have the room, I would make him my No. 1 GAMBLE/GRAB this week.

Dwayne Washington/Zach Zenner – Pay attention to Washington’s practice reports. Either he or Zenner can be a low-end GAMBLE behind Theo Riddick. Washington should be on dynasty rosters, Zenner is a flier. (D).

James White – He has been relatively quiet but Tom Brady is coming back which means the whole team gets a bump. LeGarrette Blount is still going to be the guy between the tackles and there is no shortage of receivers in New England but he might get you some good games as a points per reception gamble.

D.J. Foster – It’s New England, so if you have room to stash him in a deep dynasty he is worth a roster spot. (D).
